Are you ready for more PLANET Of The APES covers?  Good, because here are another 11 to titillate your tastebuds (metaphorically speaking) and whisk you back to the 1970s faster than you can blink.  Next time around, there'll be a dozen covers to complete the first year of MARVEL's premier primate periodical.

To this day, I haven't seen an episode of the TV series, though I long ago saw all the movies.  In fact, I've got a DVD boxed set that I really should sit down and watch again some time.  I'm sure you already know this, but Dr. ZAIUS was originally going to be played by famous thespian EDWARD G. ROBINSON (test footage exists), and I've always suspected that MAURICE EVANS, who stepped up to the plate when Robinson stepped down, was made up to resemble his predecessor.  Was that because Robinson had a face that lent itself to the ape make-up?  Possibly, but who knows for sure?

PART EIGHT Of MARVEL'S The SUPER-HEROES COVER & IMAGE GALLERY...

The mag didn't last even a year - 49 weeks and 50 issues later, it was gone as if it had never existed.  However, I know it did, because I still have all the copies of The SUPER-HEROES that I bought back then and, every so often, I'll dig them out and just browse through them, reliving yesteryear as though it were only yesterday.  If you bought this comic back in the '70s, you'll probably experience the same sensations I do as you linger lovingly on the images laid before you.

And that's my cue to let you do just that.  So - enjoy.

Continuing our run of PLANET Of The APES covers, in which KILLRAVEN has his name changed to 'APESLAYER', and all his Martian adversaries are redrawn as apes.  It strikes me that MARVEL went needlessly overboard with this one, as Killraven would probably have been perfectly acceptable to British readers the way he was.

I wonder if there's anyone who read the comic back in the day who's unaware that Apeslayer was nothing more than an expedient way of giving the character a tenuous connection with the main strip in the mag?  Would they be shocked to find out?  I can yet remember my astonishment when I learned that a villain known to me as The APEMASTER (in WHAM!) was originally called The RED GHOST (in FF #13 and read by me in MCIC #7).

Anyway, that's enough of my ruminating reflections - time for you to hopefully enjoy the covers on display.  Happy memories.
