MAN Of STEEL Vs MAN Of IRON - PART EIGHTEEN Of COMIC COVERS 'SNAP'!...

Having shown you The INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #80 in a fairly recent post, it's the perfect time to show the cover it inspired 20-odd years later - The ADVENTURES Of SUPERMAN #435.  Which one do you prefer?  Go on, force yourself, frantic one - pick a favourite!  Below is IM #80 again to remind you.

The OLD ORDER CHANGETH...

JACK KIRBY, great as he was, wasn't always consistent from panel-to-panel, as can be seen above.  The woman next to the older man in the first pic is, in the second, suddenly alongside the younger man who was on the other side of the old guy.

This continuity lapse was corrected for reprints over the years, meaning that, unless you own the original ish of NEW GODS #1, you've never seen that panel as Jack originally drew it.  A  trivial thing to be sure, but I thought you might like to know.

(And in the reprint below, the blank space left by the deleted 'continued' panel hasn't been fully filled in.  Tsk, tsk - how careless of them.)

KLASSIC KIRBY KOMIC KOVERS: The INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #80...

You all know the story about IRON MAN's nose, don't you?  Apparently, on a visit to the MARVEL offices one day, STAN LEE was looking at some Iron Man pages of art and said something like "Shouldn't he have a nose?"  What he meant was that the headpiece looked too flat-faced, and that there should be some subtle contour to suggest that the Golden Avenger had a nose.

However, he was taken literally, and up went the cry, "Stan says give Iron Man a nose, so that's what we'll do!"  And that's how ol' Iron Britches got that awful-looking facial protuberance for however long it lasted.  I'm not sure whether this next part of the story is true or not, but, one day, Stan saw Chrome Dome's snitch and asked "What's that awful thing?"  Up went the cry, "Stan doesn't like Iron Man's nose - get rid of it!"  As Stan says, they probably wished he'd make up his mind, but that ugly snozzle was never what he'd meant in the first place.

When JACK KIRBY drew the iconic cover of issue #80, perhaps he drew the nose himself, perhaps it was added at the inking stage by AL MILGROM, I'm not sure. However, I never liked that nose, so by the use of computer magic, I've removed it, to reflect my own personal preference as regards Iron Man's facial features.  So whaddya think, Criv-ites?  Do you prefer the Gold and Crimson Gladiator with or without his '70s nostril nonsense?  Do tell!

COMIC COVERS 'SNAP'! - PART SEVENTEEN...

Yet another entry into this occasional series, frantic ones.  There's a 23 year gap between these two mags, and a 29 year gap between the second one and now.  How come the latter, longer, period seems only a fraction of the former one?  I can never get my head around these paradoxical discrepancies in time.  What about the rest of you crazy Crivvies?

RECOMMENDED READING: DICK BRIEFER'S FRANKENSTEIN & IRON FIST EPIC COLLECTION...

All you really need to know about this great book is on the back cover, so I won't hit you with any redundant waffle from my good self.  I first read about DICK BRIEFER's FRANKENSTEIN comicbooks back in 1977, in The FRANKENSTEIN FILE, a book edited by PETER HAINING.  There was a chapter by DENIS GIFFORD, in which he admitted ripping off Briefer's version of the monster for CRASH COMICS #1, although he rechristened him KRANKENSTEIN, The Monster Funster. However, visually, he was a carbon copy of the U.S. PRIZE COMICS original.

Next up, comes MARVEL's EPIC COLLECTION of IRON FIST.  Again, read the back cover (below) for all the relevant info.  Both these books are doubtless available in your local comics store or book shop, so pop right along to either of them today and treat yourself to at least one of them.  You'll be glad you did!  So what're you waiting for?  Get going.
