ADVENTURE INTO... FEAR!

Copyright MARVEL COMICS

Here's a great reprint mag published in 1970, simply entitled FEAR.  Containing stories from MARVEL's anthology monster mags, it's a nice little reminder of the sort of stories ATLAS (one of Marvel's previous names) produced before superheroes took off again in 1961 with the introduction of the Fabulous FF.

Some fine artists here, including KIRBY, DITKO, and HECK.  What more could you ask for in one mag?

I have not seen that Kirby page before, and look how good Don Heck draws.
Is Don Heck also the artist on the bottom drawing of the mummy?

That is a quality comic.

He sure is, Baab. Ol' Don was one Heck of an artist! (See what I did there?)

Love this comic! Got it when I was just a kid and read the absolute crap out of it. These old monster comics were fun.

I think I got my copy sometime in the '80s or '90s, Rip, can't recall precisely when. However, you're right - these comics were fun.

I loved all these Marvel monster reprint comics as well ((Monsters on the Prowls etc.) most had amazing covers that were worth the cover price alone. “Fear” was one of my favourites of this type, and I have a vivid memory of picking up issue 3 in Woolworths in Cambuslang – I can’t recall anything about the stories in it but I remember holding onto it for years and loving the “chunky” cover of it with 2 lumbering giant monsters fighting each other (I think one was called ”Zzzzutak” or something with a lot of “Z’s”) and that thick spine these comics had. I’ve been on the lookout for another copy ever since and just missed getting it last Christmas at City Centre Comics but someone just got it in front of me :(

I always thought Don Heck inthe 50s was one of the best comic artists around and had a modern style for the time.

I knew that Woolworth's once sold comics, PM ('cos I bought Batman #184 in my local Woolies in the '60s), but I'm surprised to learn that they were still selling them in the early '70s (don't think mine did). Marvel did a softcover volume back in the '90s, called Monster Masterworks, which reprinted a lot of those old tales. Might be worth tracking one down (I've got one). Don Heck was a great artist, but I wasn't too keen on some of his later work toward the end of his career.

Maybe my memory isn't as vivid as I thought - I do remember getting FEAR 3 in Cambuslang so it could have been the newsagents near Wollies (it was also a large shop) think it ws called "Swans" - I forgot about that "Monster Masterworks" edition I will look it out (remember buying a couple of the "Monster Menace" comcis Marvel did a few yars ago with this stuff, pity it didn't last to long)

On the other hand, PM, you could be right about buying it in Woolies. Maybe Cambuslang sold comics for longer than my branch did. I used to buy the '70s versions of Monsters On The Prowl and Creatures On The Loose mags. They were great.
