PART FOUR OF TOPPS 1966 BATMAN CARDS...

Images copyright DC COMICS & TOPPS

Those who've commented on this sizzlin' series so far have all been in favour of seeing more cards, but to be honest, they don't seem to have caught on with the majority of all you cavortin' Criv-ites.  These TOPPS BATMAN cards from 1966 are highly sought-after collectors' items, and were reissued in a deluxe set in '89 (from which these scans come), so chances are that if you had them back in the '60s (or '80s), you'll enjoy seeing them again.  Just one thing though - let me know if you do, will you, so that I'm not wasting my time scanning them for an ever-diminishing, uninterested audience.  Good lads.

These are great, keep them coming. When I was a nipper I collected loads of cards. Batman, The Beatles, The Monkees, Land of the Giants, The Man from UNCLE, Civil War to name but a few. All long since gone. The only ones I've ever replaced are the Mars Attacks set when they were reissued a couple of years ago.

I used to have a full set of The Champions cards, Mel. Wish I had them again.

Walked into a house clearance bric-à-brac shop in Chatham about 15 years ago and bought the red and black sets complete and in pretty good nick. Paid about £10 for each set. Yes you do get days when your luck is in.

When i was at school in the sixties most of my classmates and friends had bundles of football card collections, usually tied together with a thick elastic band.Boring!... I was more interested in those mentioned by Mel.Some of them had a small part of a larger picture printed on the back of them thus encouraging the collecter to complete the set in order to view the finished image. The only downside was the ridiculous sliver of gunge which they passed off as chewing gum. This was always quickly disposed of,unfortunately not before leaving a slightly nauseatingly whiff of cloying sweetness on the cards, that i can still smell to this day.

More, more, please more. I remember seeing the re-isssued set in Odessey-7 in Leeds back in '89. I scoffed, thinking "Don't need those, I have the originals...". Many have the times been that I cursed myself for not picking them up. These scans just make me regret it even more, since the printing on the re-issued set was obviously far superior to my '66 cards. Drat!

Ken, was that the originals, or the '89 reissues? Nice to have 'though, either way.

I try not to remember that smell, Moony. Thankfully, the reissues were never in contact with that nauseating substance. Give us a call when you're going into college next week.

I saw an original set of original cards in the back shop of Glasgow's FP around the mid-'90s, Staz. If I recall correctly, they were slightly smaller and not quite so glossy (if at all).

I couldn't comment on the size without having the re-issued ones to compare to, I have one of the original 'red bat' set on my desk (Cycling Crusader), but I can't find a ruler to measure it!! As for the finish on the originals: they have a slight sheen, more of a 'satin' finish I suppose.

BTW. On a previous 'Bat-cards' post, I mentioned my favorite card. I have found a scan of it online, here's a link...

When I was a kid, I loved the fact that the artist had drawn Batman's utility belt the way it looked in the TV show, & now how it looked in the comics.

Can't find a ruler, Staz? How do you draw your panel borders? The new ones are approx 64 X 89 mm and are quite glossy. I noticed as a kid that sometimes Batman's costume was almost as it was on TV and sometimes it wasn't. Shouldn't have been too hard to keep the cards consistent, I would've thought.

I meant 'not how it looked in the comics'.. sheesh.

Kid, I was six when the Batman TV show debuted so I was at the perfect age to be drawn into the show and went Bat-Crazy. Since money was tight I was able to only buy the smaller items, but I fondly recall buying a Whitman Batman coloring book and going to the candy store down the block from my school and collecting the cards. Like others, I bought and collected card sets, including the Green Hornet, Monkees, Marvel Super-Heroes and later Dark Shadows. And yes, I ate the gum, too!

Panel borders Kid? One word for you... Photoshop. I haven't actually drawn an panel border in years. That said, I do on occasions use a 'straight edge' when drawing, but I use a steel rule (so it doesn't warp, bend or break) without measurement markings.

Nick, I was 7 when Batman turned up on British TV. I had a few choice items of merchandise, but usually the less expensive items. Had the Aurora Batman kit and the Marx Twistable Batman. Still got the replacements I got many years ago.

Ooh, don't have Photoshop, Staz. I'm old-fashioned that way.

Not only keep on showing them, but if you have any of the others mentioned by Mel I'd love to see them as well!

Kid said...

Alas, JP, I have none of them - at the moment.

Kid,

Cards were the the 1966 issued original sets
I am pleased to say. I forgot to add that in the same visit I also picked up a half set of the photo Riddler black backed originals. Believe me I spent a good few hours rooting around that shop but unfortunately nothing of any interest was to be had.
