MONDAY IS 'WHAM!' DAY - OR AT LEAST IT USED TO BE...

Copyright REBELLION

I thought you'd enjoy seeing some of the contents from the comic lying on the floor in the photo in the previous post, so here are a handful of pages from WHAM! #134, cover-dated January 7th 1967.  Regarding the classic FRANKIE STEIN strip, I'm lucky enough to own the original art for this legendary KEN REID page, and it's indeed an enormous joy and wonder to behold.  There's no point begging, you can't have it and that's final.  The SAMMY SHRINK page is drawn by DAVE JENNER, who would be followed by TERRY BAVE not too long after, at first imitating Jenner's style but gradually supplanting it with his own.

The FANTASTIC FOUR page consists of two U.S. sized pages, cut and pasted into a single U.K. one.  I think The TIDDLERS pages are drawn by MIKE LACEY in a pseudo-BAXENDALE style, and are typical of the kind of humour to be found in most ODHAMS PRESS publications of the period.  I just love that colour cover!

Before I ever saw this, I had pre-posted a WHAM strip on my FOUR-COLOR SHADOWS blog that will go up tomorrow!

I'll take a look tomorrow. Should be interesting.

That's a nice example of Ken Reid's work to be in possession of. Frankie Stein really seemed to give him licence to exploit his talents. Another one of my favourites is The Nerves.

Actually had some original Ken Reid Nervs artwork at one time. I think my favourite by him is Frankie 'though.

Eh?

"The Fantastic Four - hated and hounded by the human race..."

Someone was asleep at the wheel there - if there's one thing the FF never had to worry about PR was it!

Great scans - it took three months for such publications to get here by boat, but if memory recalls they were my introduction to Marvel comics before the real thing....and those humour strips were the icing on the cake (The Cloak and The Nervs from sister comics were personal faves)

cheers

Ah, but that's part of the story, B - the human race turning against the FF. You might be interested to know that the first and last episodes of The Cloak are floating around on my blog somewhere - just in case you haven't seen them.
