JOE 90 (Speccy Four-Eyes) BADGES...

Copyright relevant owner

Time for some more badges, methinks, so here's a reissue from the Gerry Anderson Store of the half-dozen Joe 90 badges that were issued individually with breakfast cereal Sugar Smacks back in the '60s.  They're affixed to the card backing (though removeable), so the card text is a little out-of-focus as it sits behind the badges by a couple of millimetres, but I'm sure you won't mind that too much.  I'm hoping they do the Captain Scarlet ones next.

Kid, I think the faded Joe image on the back card is staring out at you, probably thinking of all the nice things you've call him in the past, and just plotting his ghostly revenge...just thought I'd add an early Halloween twist to your purchase. Heh heh.

Did anyone ever like Joe 90 himself? Sure, the cars and the concept were cool, as was the theme tune, but Joe, with his 'Andy Pandy'-style dungarees and girlie-voice, was a right wee sissie.

He is very 'Milkybar Kid' and the series was quite weird, especially that spinning cage contraption. It blew my mind when I was younger, I always thought it was a really dangerous machine and would mince him up if he stepped into it? (I bet you wished he had). Not really one of my favourites either, saying that, I still had the diecast toys, they were lots of fun, as were most toys back then...

I'll have to get myself a Dinky version of the car some day, AAW, as I've only got the Vivid Imaginations one, which is very similar, but without the battery-operated light.

Joe 90 was the first Gerry Anderson series I ever watched so I have quite fond memories of it. I also associate Joe 90 with my grandmother's colour TV so I can only assume I watched episodes of Joe 90 on that TV.

Was that the TV behind cabinet doors, CJ? I seem to remember you mentioning it once upon a time a few years back.

Yes, that's the one, Kid - I don't even remember mentioning it so I'm impressed by your excellent memory!

Sometimes excellent, other times appalling, CJ. Not sure where the balance lies nowadays.

I wasn't a big fan of Joe 90 but I did watch it when it was on . Not one of the best from Gerry Anderson but I thought the basic premise was interesting. Although I didn't buy the Joe 90 comic I seem to recall most of the covers were from other strips ,( Land of the Giants ?).

Yeah, I watched it too, McS, if it came on when I was in front of the telly, but I don't think I made a point of watching it. And it was mainly the theme song that attracted me to it, rather than any of the characters. Interestingly, once the GA shows started using more realistically-proportioned puppets, they sort of lost their appeal, with the possible exception of the first one, Captain Scarlet. However, Joe 90 and Secret Service just didn't grab the public in the way that earlier shows did.

I think Joe 90 was the cover star in the earlier editions of his own comic, and maybe other shows took over later. I've got them all on data disc, but it's years since I looked at them, so I can't quite remember what the covers featured, apart from the first one as I have the actual first issue.

I still have my original Sam Loover badge, as well as the JOE 90 logo badge.

Can't remember, B, whether I had any of the original badges, though I may have had some Captain Scarlet ones.
