R.I.P. - JIM SHOOTER...

Jim Shooter was a prominent if controversial figure in the world of comics, and now that he's died from cancer at the age of 73, you'll be able to read all about his career on loads of blogs - who'll tell you all about him far better than I ever could.  However, he did a lot for comics and their creators and that should never be forgotten, whatever else might be said about him.

Terrible news. Jim Shooter's passing's a real shock. His first Avengers run meant a lot to me - my favourite superhero series, with happy memories a-plenty ( holidays & birthdays ) tied to his stories, and those days.

And he was the youngest writer of some DC stories when he was yet a teenager, P, as I'm sure you know. Yes, his death is a shock and a shame.

Wow that is a sad news, 73 isn't young , but its really not that old. I wasnt really reading many Marvels when he came to prominence but I was certainly aware of him.

Not old at all really, McS, I'm not that far away from that age myself - nor are you, are you? A few short years and we'll be there. He started writing for DC when he was only around 14. Amazing, eh?

Yeah, today I'm trying to put together a blogpost myself about his legacy, though I didn't read a lot of the stuff from other companies than Marvel and DC. There were some things he did that I liked, and others I didn't like. I suppose one that stands out is the conclusion of the "Phoenix Saga," which was a much ballsier conclusion than the wimpy wrapup Claremont and Byrne originally submitted. But one's miles may vary.

I wasn't too keen on Secret Wars, GP, though I'm not sure whether that was down to the story or the art. It would've been better looking with John Buscema on it. I've recently been buying the Facsimile Editions of the 'Phoenix Saga', leading up to the 'wrap-up' in the next X-Men facsimile (though it's been reprinted before).

I recall Jim Shooters name on a few early Legion of Superrhero strips when I was a child. Yeah I'm only 8 years younger than he was, scary stuff.

Dunno about you, McS, but I'm hoping for at least another 80 years before I fall off the twig. In fact, I'll have to be pushed.
