YOWZA! PART TEN OF THE TITANS COVER COMPARISONS - FANTASTIC FOUR #98...

Images copyright MARVEL COMICS

Aha, not only has it been redrawn, it's been done so in reverse, just to keep all of us on our toes in regard to FANTASTIC FOUR #98 and THE TITANS #41 - in this, the latest in our series of cover comparisons.  Well, you know the drill by now - if you'd like to air your thoughts, theories, or observations on these two images, then our comments section awaits your input.  Why not avail yourself of its facilities and share your wisdom with Crivendom?

Kid, This cover was redrawn by Larry Lieber (signed) with inks by Frank Giacoia. It's an acceptable job by Larry, although I'm not particularly enamored of the original (too many word balloons, for one thing, and if I recall correctly Joe Sinnott stated that he put a lot more shading on the Thing, which was eliminated on the published cover.

Yeah, I saw it was signed, so didn't bother mentioning it was Lieber who drew it. (I knew my readers would see the name on the cover.) I wonder if the 'shaded' version still exists - I'll have to take a look at my Omnibus edition reprinting the tale in case it's included in that.

These British landscape covers are often difficult to ID. I think many have been misattributed to Lieber and Wilson (though not in this case). I’ve shown them to Ron, and he says many aren’t his. I tried to show them to Larry, but at this stage, he doesn’t really recognize his old work. Looking at the original art, a number of them were drawn (traced/light boxed) by Steve Stiles, David Wenzel, and Howard Bender, which supports this theory. Often impossible to tell if the original art wasn’t signed.

Thanks for that, JS. It wouldn't surprise me if these covers were needed in a hurry, and some artists simply don't remember doing them after all this time, such was the rush they were produced in between other assignments.

Any chance of seeing some more?

Actually, there's a few in my drafts file, but they won't be seeing the light of day any time soon - if ever.
