The first 20 or so issue of MWOM had some brillaint covers (this looks like the work of Jim Starlin). I still have this issue in my coolections (along withthe first 30 issues of MWOM) so may look it out - great times, 43 years ago yikes !!!

Jim Starlin and, I think, inked by Joe Sinnott, McS. Great times indeed.

I missed the first two years of Marvel UK so by the time I started reading POTA the weeklies had become fully Americanized with the corner boxes and "Marvel Comics Group" etc - it's interesting to see how they weren't like that at all to begin with.

That little corner box wasn't too long in coming 'though, CJ, if I remember correctly.

The corner box was a favourite of mine. I hadn't caught on to its real purpose but my home made comics always carried one. "This is the main character" it conveyed. Giant Man and the Wasp were omitted from the Avengers weekly box. " Also rans" I thought. Then when the founding members left in No13 I couldn't believe it. "The picture will have to change" I thought - and of course it did but the faces looked a bit feeble and so I always consider that as a weak line up. The worst corner box was when that upstart Shang Chi was placed in it on No29. He already had the first third of the comic and now had booted the Avengers out of that hallowed corner. Gaah!

And as you'll know, Chris, 'twas Steve Ditko who came up with the idea of the corner box for the U.S. monthlies. The Avengers weekly reminded me of Odhams' Terrific, as it also featured The Avengers and Dr. Strange. Shame about the murky printing in the former 'though.

I didn't know the corner box idea was from Ditko (your a mine of information) - I really liked that box and like Christopher my !home made" comics also had this box. My favourites were the Vision (Avengers) , Spider-man (the Romita one around issue 90 ish where he is standing) and Captain America and the Falcon around the time Sal Buscema was drawing the book - ahhhh great times!

DC Comics must've thought it was a good idea, McS, because they adopted something similar in the '70s (a circle in fact). I think Romita had the Spidey figure from ASM Annual #2 in mind when he drew that figure. In fact, I think Ditko's version was used at one time as well - I'll have to check. Great times indeed.
