FOR YOUR EYES ONLY TRAILER...

Every so often, the BOND producers seem to
get embarrassed by the perceived excesses of some of
the films and try and steer a more realistic keel.  Usually
they fall flat on their @rses, but I think that FOR YOUR
EYES ONLY was one of their more successful attempts
in that direction.  Shame about that awful SHEENA
EASTON title song 'though.

I've always liked the title song - what's wrong with it ? It must have been an exciting time for Sheena Easton, becoming a pop star on 'The Big Time' (the only time Esther Rantzen was responsible for creating a pop singer), having a U.S. #1 hit and then singing the Bond theme tune - and appearing in the opening titles which (I think) was the only time that happened.

This flick needed more inflatable gondolas, they should've brought back Alfie Bass too with a bigger role. At least they were back on track with next one with those floppy shoes and red nose, that's what Bond's really about, I wonder if Sylvester McCoy was ever up for the role?

What's wrong with it? Her performance! It's way out of her range in the high notes. It would have been better with a real singer, not a pub one.

******

Of course Sylvester was considered for the role. Unfortunately, he was busy with 'Vision On' at the time.

I liked Sheena. Unfortunately I think she got really sidetracked when she was cast as Sonny Crockett's wife in Miami Vice and now I don't know what she's doing. Hey you should be supporting a Scotswoman ! Freedom!

Terrible accent - her original Glasgow one AND her phoney American one. Nice looking woman, but she sounds off-key to me in some of those high notes. Lulu's Man With The Golden Gun theme was a belter 'though, 'cos she's a better singer. See? I am supporting a Scotswoman - just a different one. FREEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!

Easton picked up a bit of a rep for being: difficult...

The story was that she turned from a being a really sweet girl into a diva overnight. Of course, I have no opinion on the veracity of the tales related to me but I think I would've been wearing a crash helmet If I'd been in the studio.

Or ear plugs at least.

I've never listened to her much, I turn off when that smootchy stuff starts, it's for the chicks really, is she really that bad then? It could possible explain her reputation, if she where a bit self conscious of her vocal ability.

I've never listened to her much either, I've only heard two of her songs - her first hit and the Bond theme song. In that, she's straining, and seems off-key in places. "Only for yoooooooooooooo" - nah, it just doesn't sound right.

For curiosity sake, I gave it a spin, had to use the headphones though otherwise I'd be getting funny looks. I have to say, I thought the vocal performance was pretty good, it even sparkled in a few places, in the way that a gets imitated really badly by a lot of talent show hopefuls. You know, I might check out the albums after this. As for the tune, well it doesn't exist, it's really only a basic accompaniment, could've been better with a kinda Barney Kessel approach. There are few idiosyncrasies, 'yor' instead of you for some reason, nothing I would kick the radiogram for though.

Nah, her voice has got a nasal twang to it and has no depth - too thin. It'd not a bad song, but it needs a more powerful and consistent singer.
