PART TWO Of MARVEL'S CONAN SAGA COVER GALLERY...

Copyright MARVEL COMICS and CPI

Okay, peeps, I've kept you in suspenders long enough, so here's the second slice of covers from Conan Saga, a reprint title featuring previously published b&w tales from Savage Sword Of Conan monthly.  I recall having some covers from the UK edition of SSOC on my room wall back in the late '70s and early '80s, so contrary to my previous impression, I couldn't have given away all of my issues to a friend, unless he didn't mind having them in a cannibalised condition.

However, that's neither here nor there, so feast your eyes on another 16 painted images and wish you could 'pull' some of those gorgeous females who always seemed to be clinging to Conan's leg (or nearby).  A sweaty man seems to be irresistible to attractive women in the Hyborian Age, so why's it not the same today?  I'd be fighting 'em off with a short soft bendy stick if it were.  Feel free to comment - in fact I insist.  And be sure to keep your peepers peeled for Part Three.

Some great covers again. My favourite is issue 27 which was the cover to the first US Savage Sword of Conan magazine ( issue 16) that I bought. I wonder if the Saga covers corresponded to the contents of the original covers?

I only have one UK issue of SSOC, McS, and it's buried in a cupboard and beyond my easy ability to check. Probably not, I'd guess (with a few exceptions), as most of the covers are generic and pretty interchangeable. Funnily enough, I wondered the same thing about the variant covers (B) of Conan Reforged.

I too remember most of those covers from the UK Conan monthly. The cover of Conan Saga #30 had been the cover of UK SSOC #9 dated July 1978 featuring the adaptation of "The Slithering Shadow" which is my joint-favourite REH Conan story along with "Shadows In The Moonlight" (also known as "Iron Shadows In The Moon").

It would be interesting to learn, CJ, whether the UK SSOC used the same covers for the same stories as the US edition, or whether they didn't bother doing that as they figured (as I said) that most of them were pretty interchangeable regardless of the mag's contents. Anyone know for sure?

I don't have may UK SSOC mags now but I have Conan Saga 20 and the corresponding US SSOC issue (39) and will check the contents later this am.

Ok on a check of Conan Sage #20 and US SSOC #39 the contents are different . Saga has a nice Dick Giordano Conan tale and the original SSOC features a ( pretty poor) Sal Buscema tale. I would assume the UK titles may follow the same format

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to check, McS. Yeah, it seems that most of the covers aren't tied in to any particular story.

If you don't mind me saying, you need to redo your avatar, as your face is too low in the photo and there's too much space above your head. Makes you look like a midget trying to peer through a porthole which is too high for him.

Also, meant to say that I've actually got two UK SSOC mags - the first one and the final one (#93). I've also got the first five issues of Conan The Savage, a US b&w monthly, plus at least one (maybe more) of US SSOC.
