IT'S JIM'S BIRTHDAY - LET'S HAVE A MONSTER MASH-UP...

Images copyright TWOMORROWS PUBLISHING

It was my friend JIM's birthday on Tuesday and I didn't
get him a present.  That's okay 'though, because my pal likes to
do things differently - so he gave me a present instead.  (Can't wait
for your next birthday to see what I'll get then, Jim.)  Just look at this
superb book all about the monster craze of the 1960s (which actually
started in 1957 and lasted until the early '70s).  It's called MONSTER
MASH and covers practically every aspect of the subject that people
of a certain age are bound to find fascinating.  (If you're quick, you
may still be able to buy a copy at your local FORBIDDEN
PLANET store.)  Thanks again for the prezzie and,
one more time...

"Happy Birthday, JIM!"

I see an ape mask in the bottom right corner of the second pic so does this book count the apes in the POTA films as monsters, Kid ?

Kid said...

I suppose they do, CJ, as there's a section on Planet Of The Apes. Rush out and buy a copy.

This one is on my must by list for sure. I would have been interested just on the what the cover promised but after seeing a few sample pages over at the TwoMorrows site I was hooked. I grew up during the latter part of the period covered by this book, buying Famous Monsters, the model kits and whatever else found its way to us here in Australia.
You can tell it's written by a fan and not a company after 'Monster Kid' cash. It has everything in there that you'd want and judging by the contents page doesn't seem to miss any element of what made that time so great to be a kid.

I think you'll like it, PC. Hope you can get a copy okay.

I love the song 'Monster Mash' too - "the monster mash, it was a graveyard smash..." Did you know, Kid, that it reached #1 twice on America's Hot 100 chart - in 1962 and again on re-release in 1972.

The book covers the song as well, CJ. There's a clip on YouTube with Boris Karloff actually performing it. Worth seeing. I remember the single from its 1972 re-issue - a pal bought it at my urging.

I was finally able to get round to this book so thanks again for the “head's up” I found it to be very interesting. However I was rather disappointed on how despite being able to devote several pages to Dark Shadows (the author is clearly a fan) and Planet of the Apes the cartoon and animation inspired shows are condensed into two single pages (cluttered up with a few random monster themed cartoon drawings). The people that gave us Scooby-Doo, Goober and the Ghost Chasers, The Funky Phantom and Groovie Goolies to name but four deserved more than two pages! I would have also liked to have seen it cover other TV horror hosts of the past aside from Zacherley and it seems to me that the Marvel and DC horror comics didn’t even get a look in! That aside a very interesting book, thanks again Kid.

Nae bother, AJ. Incidentally, there's another, similar book you might like too. I can't remember it's exact name at the moment, but I'm waiting for a text from someone to remind me. Once I hear from them, I'll let you know. Perhaps that book will cover these subjects in more detail, so once you get the name you can Google search it.

Thanks Kid, any excuse to read up this stuff! Many thanks

AJ, it's called '70s Monster Memories - Google that and you'll have a selection of links to explore.

Ah! That one, yes I'm looking out for that many thanks sir :)

If you ever get it, AJ, let me know how it compares to Monster Mash.
