KLASSIC (KIRBY) KOMIC KOVERS - FANTASTIC FOUR #51...

Copyright MARVEL COMICS

Well, we've just seen the splash page of FF #51, so I thought I may as well show you the cover.  I think the top of The THING's legs are a little too wide for the top half of his body, but I don't really care, as I'm much too busy ogling The INVISIBLE GIRL.  (Who, thankfully, is quite visible in this picture.  SUSIE, I love you!)

Sue could just throw Reed a line instead of waiting for Ben (I mean "Ben") to do something !

He was already attached to a line, CJ, which snapped, and he was too far out in the Negative Zone for another one to reach him unless someone took it directly to him. That's why 'Ben' jumped into the Zone to try and grab the snapped line. Remember, Reed isn't as close as the cover suggests; that's either a screen, monitoring him, or else merely symbolic.

That cover is also reworked (and over-rendered)for the paperback version of the FF Masterworks collection, vol 6, with The Thing a tad too dark to stand out as the foreground figure and focus as he does in the original. One of may favorite FF stories, kind of character based but not short of spectacle with some of Jack's media mash-ups to depict the Negative Zone. Also like the character arc that the villain goes through, (big fan of character arcs) he's not just a guy with a black hat but has shades of grey about his character. It frustrates me that the movies don't have the quality of writing that's there in the original stories - just pick one and adapt it for the screen instead of changing the things that make these characters great! (Rant over).

I'd have to look at the original painting of that cover, PC, because Marvel black out all the background detail before publication, which doesn't always flatter the image. A dark figure won't stand out too well against a black background, but the original illo may have had a lighter colour around The Thing, making him stand out more. To be honest, I can't remember if I've seen the paperback cover, so I'm assuming it has the same black backdrop as the others in the series. Agree with you about the movies in the main. I can understand some small changes, because what works in a comic doesn't always work in a live-action (or CGI) movie, but I think they should stick to the comics' storylines as much as possible. I'd have preferred to see Don Blake as Thor for a start, as opposed to just his name on a badge.

(And FF#51 is a true classic, sure enough.)

Kid, my first comment was meant to be a joke (which fell completely flat) - I was making fun of the fact that Sue could throw Reed a line or even grab him by the hand and pull him in because he's floating just outside the entrance to the Negative Zone. Of course, I knew that wasn't the case in the actual story :D

A joke? It must be the way you tell them, CJ. You'll need to work on your delivery. (As the doctor said to the midwife.)
