SPACE CHAPLAIN? DON'T BE A DUMMY...

Copyright relevant owner

What you're looking at are two of the dummy pages for EAGLE #1, followed by the original concept for DAN DARE, who was going to be a space chaplain (before wisdom prevailed).  The future of mankind (or British comics at least) could have been so very different had Dan not been 'promoted' to space pilot, eh?  Thank goodness he was!

Dan Dare space chaplain, it could've worked: 'Your role in this mission will be vital Dan, we suspect the Kingfisher may have been waylaid by malign spirits. You'll be needed to consecrate the landing site and perform any exorcisms necessary, be sure to take plenty of holy water'. I also like the way he's been rendered as a chaplain, that bored vicar look with the hooded eyes.

I dunno, DSE - I suspect readers would also have had that 'bored vicar look' if he had been a chaplain. The comic would never have lasted 19 years.

I've never read Dan Dare (yep, another thing I've never read - it's a long list) but I'm sure it was fun in its' time - was the idea of him being a Space Chaplain supposed to represent the clean wholesomeness of British comics as opposed to those beastly American ones ? Long live the Empire and God save the Queen, hurrah !!

Another dummy I've never seen before!
Sir, you spoil us!

I suppose he was a chaplain because it was a church minister's idea to do Eagle, CJ. Write what you know they say. (Although I'm sure he'd never been to Venus.)

Yeah, I know, JP. Maybe I should charge admission?

Kingfish of course, was the name of a character on the American Radio show Amos and Andy with two black characters with the broad accents - actually voiced by two white guys. Well, hey Charlie McCarthy had a radio show and he was a ventriloquist puppet. I saw him in a movie with WC Fields last week and Edgar Bergen was quite funny, he was doing a two man comedy show with himself.

Heard OF Amos & Andy of course, Phil, but can't remember if I've ever actually heard their act.

They don't translate to modern sensibilities but Charlie MCarthy and Edgar Bergen are pretty funny. http://youtu.be/LI4HV4HUHb4
