THE TITANS CENTRE-SPREAD POSTER GALLERY - PART FIVE...

Copyright MARVEL COMICS

Yippeeee!  We're back with part five of The TITANS centre-spread cover gallery, and believe it or not, there's actually two or three good ones this time around.  Which ones do you like best - and then we'll compare notes.

My favourite here is definitely the Dr. Strange one - it looks good even in black & white. There's a Jim Starlin-ish look to it especially with the skull. Dr. Strange has always been one of my favourite Marvel characters.

I like the Iron Man one, Dr. Strange and Conan. They're not too bad at all.

The Dr Strange one is as simple a composition as the rest, but it has something else.
Mike Nasser's work with Dick Giordano inking has been mentioned elswhere for another project.
Maybe he had a pal help him out.

Reminds me ever-so-slightly of Frank Brunner mixed with, as CJ says, Jim Starlin, Baab.

Like the Man-Thing one quite a bit. It reminds me of Action Comics #1 with the guy running out of the panel in a panic.

I see what you mean, Rip. The perspective's a bit off 'though.

Nasser (now going by the name Netzer) did another nice poster of the Vision, inked by Neal Adams, which I suspect we will be seeing soon. He also did a couple of other centrespreads in Super Spider-Man around this time, and many splashes and pinups in these and other weeklies between March and November 1976.

Anyone notice that the inker on the Iron Man one is none other than Craig Russell? Next batch of centrespreads will include a nice one by Marshall Rogers, who got his start with the British weeklies.

Thanks for the info, Jason. I must confess that I don't pay much attention to the signatures on these drawings unless they're obvious.

The Conan one's not bad, some nice flourishes on the inking. Sonja looks a bit lumpy on top though, maybe the bikini was hastily extended through editorial oversight?

The Mike Nasser poster (in his Neal Adams phase) is very much taken from the excellent Dr Strange stories in the US at that time, and is similar to a few panels that appeared in issue 4 of that series with art by Frank Brunner (inked by Dick Giordano and Crusty Bunkers) saying that its pretty good.

I suppose a chainmail bra would be kinda lumpy, DSE. What amuses me 'though, is that a baddie would simply stab her in her unprotected stomach.

Ooh, ta for that McScotty, I'll take a look.
