I liked the first cover the best. I wasn't able to keep up with all the story back in the day, our distribution in my area was spotty at best, but I eventually did catch up with it. I was a bit young for it, to be honest, when it was first published.

Ok I'll try that again with auto correct switched off. My favourite covers are 1, 9 and 16 and if pushed to make a decision issue 9 is my favourite cover. My first Demon comic was number 13 but I picked up issue 8 to 12 soon after. I really liked Kirbys Demon character and it was one of his best DC comics (imho) along with the excellent Kamandi and Jimmy Olsen. I hadn't seen the last issue cover before so nice to see it here.

The series is available in a collected edition, G, so if you ever wanted to remind yourself of what it was all about, it's out there for you.

Actually, you saw the cover to #16 on 20th October 2013, when you left a comment on the third part of my three-part cover gallery, McS. Jimmy Olsen will always be my favourite series of Kirby mags at DC, though the other two you mention aren't bad at all.

One and two in that order are my faves. I skipped out on Kirby and DC when the Fourth World closed down and didn't get into The Demon for some years after the fact. Great stuff!

This blog is a constant source of inspiration. Whether it's through personal stories, interviews, or success stories, the author never fails to motivate readers to pursue their dreams and live their best lives. Thank you for the continuous inspiration!

I can't recall just how many issues I bought at the time, RJ. I know I bought #1, but I may not have seen most of them until years later.

TL's comment was attached to a link, which suggests it's Spam, but I decided to cut & paste it without the link so that you Crivs could read the (insincere) flattery and not be subjected to the ad for another blog.

Great covers, Kid, but I know nothing about The Demon.

You know he's a demon called The Demon and that he had 16 issues devoted to him in the '70s, CJ. That's enough to start with, eh?

Kid, I've googled The Demon (oooh, matron!) so now I'm up to speed with the character.

I was looking in the window of my local comics shop yesterday and I saw a facsimile of Incredible Hulk #181 which I think you mentioned in a reply to a recent comment.

Oh, you saucy little Googler, CJ. Yeah, Marvel has already done facsimiles of Hulk 180-182 (two or three years back), and now they've reprinted 180 & 181. I imagine they'll do 182 again as well.

Another title I've never seen or even heard of before. Just when I think I have an above-average knowledge of comics, something like this pops-up and I am genuinely speechless and grateful it wasn't my Millionaire question. Thanks for the gallery, Kid. Issue 1 is my favourite: maximum impact for a debut. Is Hellboy a rip-off of this character?

Kid said...

That's a good question, M, but I've never read a Hellboy mag, only seen the first movie, so I don't know for sure. However, The Demon came first, so I'd assume it's a pretty safe bet that he at least 'inspired' Hellboy. Incidentally, DC published a collected edition of The Demon a few years ago, which is probably still available on eBay. (Just in case you're interested in seeing what you missed.)

My favourites are #2 and #5. #2 because it is very similar in composition to Neal Adams' cover of Detective Comics #405, my favourite Adams Batman cover. Not to suggest that Jack swiped of course.

#5 I just love the purple cover - so much so that I photographed it to make a poster when I bought it from King's newsagents in Southsea, back in 1973.

Of the sixteen issues, I managed to pick them all up bar #3 and #8. And then sold the lot back in '83. I currently have #1, #8 and #15 in one of the longboxes...must dig them out.

Saw your comment about Jimmy Olson being your favourite Kirby run at DC. I agree wholeheartedly. It would make a wacky live action series if DC films honcho James Gunn was ever inclined to the Fourth World to our screens.

You should consider getting one of the collected editions, B. There's hardcover and softcover editions, issued a few years apart. 11 of the covers in this post were scanned from a collected edition as I only have the first 5 in the series when it comes to actual issues. I've often wondered if Kirby's Jimmy Olsen is my favourite out of his DC mags because it had Superman, which made me more 'comfortable' with the series as opposed to his other mags featuring a collection of 'strangers'. Jack was never quite as adept as Stan Lee at imbuing characters with a 'soul', whereas Superman's character was already well-established.

Kid, Marvel has just published a facsimile of Uncanny X-Men #101 featuring the debut of the Phoenix if you're interested.

Thanks, CJ, though I already knew about it - it's been sitting in my eBay 'watch' list for a while now. I'll be buying it soon.
