CAPTAIN AMERICA #117 FACSIMILE EDITION...

The Coming Of The Falcon!

Copyright MARVEL COMICS

Here's another goodie now in my possession - Marvel's Facsimile Edition of Captain America #117, featuring The Falcon's first appearance!  Mix awesome art by Gene Colan and Joe Sinnott with the usual sparkling scripting of Stan Lee, and what do you have?  Another instant collectors' item classic, that's what!  This one's been out for a few weeks (though it only arrived at Castel Crivens today) so you might've already bought it by now.  If not, grab one when and while you can!

Excellent choice. There is a run of Captain America from around #114 that has some o the most beautiful artwork Marvel ever produced.Gene Colan was teamed up with Joe Sinnott for roughly 20 issues -2 years of basically the perfect Marvel comic with the bonus of Stan Lee scripting(Though this was basically Stans swansong on the title and some issues were not his finest but at the time I devoured every issue and had no idea that any issues were better than the next...they were all 10 out of 10 and I loved them!Still do)Personal favourites were #121 with The Man Brute,a story that stayed with me for years, and #127 with Wally Wood inks..as good as it gets. Also a mad story with a giant ape that involves Cap falling into the biggest hole in the world with Colan at the top of his game..incredible.(That reads like Gene Colan fell into the hole as well... but you know what I mean.)Must re-read them soon.Great post Kid.Marvel could do no wrong at the time and it is only the passage of time that makes me criticise the stories.Glad I read them and will read them again. Thanks for the gentle prod to re-read the comics of my youth.I keep repeating myself but we were truly blessed.Stay well my friend.

Yes, it was a good run, though I wouldn't have seen the original issues at the time. I think I read them when they were reprinted in the UK weeklies though - or somewhere, not sure. This is a really good facsimile and there's not much I can nitpick about it - Marvel manages to make even most of the ads look new, unlike DC's facsimiles, which I think have been discontinued now. I've got a couple of Captain America Epic Collections, must see about buying some more. Thanks for commenting, TF, stay safe.

Totally concur on the Man Brute issue FFF it's still one of my all time favourite comics. Capt America was a great comic for years apart from Gene Colans amazing run John Romita (senior) drew some great issues as did Sal Buscema.

I've just noticed that it's not Cap Epic Collections I've got, it's Daredevil, so I'll have to add some CA ones when I get the chance. I must've got confused because Gene Colan drew both mags at some stage. Frank Robbins drew drew Cap as well, and I quite enjoyed his style on the strip.

I loved Colans run on DD as well some really stunningly illustrated issues and great story's. As you know I'm a bit of a Frank Robbins fan so I loved his run on Cap (well most of it some inkers were not suited to his style).Robbins did a great issue of DD that's worth looking out for.

I liked the issue he drew just before Kirby resumed the reins back in the '70s. It was also reprinted in a Titans Annual with a few pages edited out, but it was done so cleverly that most readers wouldn't have noticed. (Usually it was all too obvious when pages were missing as it was done so clumsily.) I can't recall whether I've done a cover gallery of my non-Kirby Cap issues, I'll have to check. If not, that's one to look out for, McS.

Though it's fairly said that some of Colan's CAP issues tended to start out with cinematic buildups that took too long, and made for rushed final pages, this conclusion to the Red Skull tale is perfectly paced and one of my favorites from the period.

Yes, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read, GP, though Marvel should do a Facsimile Edition of #118 as well. After all, it's touted as being a 'landmark issue'.

I do love the Colan Cap issues. I remember the two issues when “Bucky” came back. I found those really good but upon rereading the story was ok though the art was awesome. And there was a monologue where Cap was wandering the street thinking how old fashioned he was and not relevant to the modern times. That really stuck with me.

Yeah, PS, Stan always knew how to write a good soliloquy when nothing much was happening - and sometimes even when there was.

Here it is Cap 122. For some reason this issue really stuck with me. The gorgeous Colan art. The Lee dialogue . And this is one time I felt Kirby would not have been right for this issue. https://thevirtuesofcaptainamerica.com/2018/12/21/captain-america-122-february-1970/amp/

Took a look, PS, great stuff. I'm sure I've got a reprint of that story somewhere, so when I remember where, I'll give it a proper re-read. Ta for the link.

Scratch that earlier comment - I actually DO have Cap Epic Collections - the first three volumes as it happens. They were behind another row of books on one of my shelves.
