FRANK THORNE'S ONLY MARVEL UK WORK?

I'm now too old to reliably recall whether I ever had Planet Of The Apes & Dracula Lives #100 back in the day or not, but having recently seen the cover of it over on McScotty's blog That Was Then (should actually be called Now And Then 'cos he doesn't post very often, the lazy loafer), I decided I must have the issue for myself so promptly bought one via eBay.  Why?  Well, as far as is known (by me anyway), it's the only cover Frank Thorne ever drew for a UK Marvel mag, perhaps even any UK mag in fact, and that makes it worth having in my collection.

Frank was an excellent artist and he drew the female figure in such a way as to induce feelings of lust and desire in young teenage boys who slobbered and drooled over babes like Red Sonja - She-Devil With A Sword.  He could draw bosoms as if they were ripe pears just waiting to be plucked (I said plucked, Melvin) and it's difficult for me to tear my eyes away from the lovely lass on the cover of POTA's Centennial issue, despite all the action going on.  Anyway, thought I'd show it here to save you having to jump over to McS's blog to view it.  I'm thoughtful that way.

POTA & Dracula Lives #99-101 reprinted the apes story which had appeared in POTA #85-86 only a few months earlier. This was obviously extremely annoying especially as it meant #100 didn't even feature an original apes story. Even the comic's title was completely misleading as Dracula only appeared until #92 so the final 31 issues (#93-123) featured no Dracula strip at all. I persevered with POTA & DL until #116 but in hindsight I wish I'd ditched the comic when the merger happened in #88.

I thought that perhaps Dracula's absence from this ish was due to the glossary that was included, CJ, but you've cleared that up for me. 100 was really quite an underwhelming issue and it's main attraction to collectors nowadays is its centenary status and the Frank Thorne cover.

I just opened up my copy and I agree itdms a pretty average comic for a 100th issue. I'm afraid I won't be posting for a while , sadly my better halfs mum passed away after a long illness.

That's a shame, McS, condolences to your better half and yourself at this sad time. Trust me to joke about how often you post when there's a good reason at the moment not to.

In my opinion POTA & Dracula Lives #100 wasn't really #100 anyway because the merger created a new comic so POTA & DL #88 should have been numbered as #1 making #100 only #13.

Yes, you've said so before, CJ, but you're wrong. POTA was added to, in content and in title, but it's the publishers who decide about the numbering. So it wasn't a new comic, it was an old comic with some new things added. If a merger creates a new comic, then it isn't really a merger then, is it?

There were a lot of mergers in '70s Marvel UK, Kid, so it would have meant a lot of #1 relaunches I must admit.

The purpose of a merger, as you'll know, CJ, is to capture the readership of the declining title and add them to the better-selling one. If you relaunch it as a new number one, while it MIGHT attract new readers who've never read either mag before, there's no guarantee a lot of old ones won't jump off at that point. It's a bit of a gamble really.
