DAREDEVIL #1 FACSIMILE EDITION...

Copyright MARVEL COMICS

Another nice new Facsimile Edition that every true Marvel fan should have, so buy yours while they're available and before they shoot up in price on eBay.  Would've been better with the barcode box on the back cover (same as DC) and as you can see below, the indicia is in the wrong place as it would've been under the ad on the inside cover when originally published back in the '60s (hence the space under the ad next to the splash page)*.  That aside, it's still worth having, but I can't help but wish they'd print it on a high quality newsprint paper (again, like DC) as opposed to the slightly glossy paper they use.  At least they've included the 'Continued After Next Page...' lines, which help capture the feel of the period.  Can't wait 'til they do Journey Into Mystery #83.

(*Incidentally, Marvel eventually moved the indicia to under the splash page in their mags, but at this time it was still placed under the interior cover ad.)

And look below - my original copy of issue #1, and below that, both issues side-by-side.

They should have produced a UK-price variant facsimile with £3.99 as the price (or whatever you have to pay for new comics in the UK these days), as a true comparison to your 9d original.

I complained to Tom Brevoort about the bar code on the Marvel covers, but never received a reply. This year, I hope to finish up my facsimile collection. All those PS Artbooks ones! You are lucky the UK postage is so cheap. That Daredevil issue is so good with my fave, Bill Everett, And isn't Joe Orlando in there too? I wont get my copy until Christmas but am looking forward to it. I think I have the Dollar book they put out a few years ago. You are lucky to have an original.

Not really too bothered about that, B. Some Americans don't regard the UK variants as authentic anyway, even though they were printed on the same presses from the same plates after the price was amended and the date removed. I'd settle for them placing the new indicia in the same spot as the original.

He's not responsible for the facsimiles, is he? That would explain some things. When he was in charge of the Masterworks series, they were very poor, with loads of mistakes and oversights. He even insisted that Daredevil #1 in the first printing of its Masterworks volume was from the original proofs, whereas even a quick comparison with the published issue conclusively demonstrates he was wrong. He doesn't strike me as very observant at times, which is hardly a plus for an editor.
