PART TWELVE OF THE TITANS COVER COMPARISONS - FANTASTIC FOUR #103...

Images copyright MARVEL COMICS

Okay, folks - just clearing out my drafts file.  You now have every post in this series I'd prepared before I pulled the plug on regular posting on this blog.  Maybe one day I'll get around to compiling and publishing the rest of the cover comparisons.  If so, you'll be the first to know - promise.

******

You all know the drill by now - two covers for the same story, one based on the other, but different artists on each, several years apart.  Got a preference?  You know where the comments section is, frantic ones - don't neglect it.

Not a bad cover re-do by Jeff Aclin, with inks by Frank Giacoia.

Ta much, though Jeff Aclin isn't a name I'm familiar with, Nick. Any more info about him?

Hi Kid hope your coping with your situation - I remember a couple of brilliant Jeff Aclin covers for MWOM (cant recall the issue but one had the Vision so was probably when MWOM featured the Avengers, the other was the Hulk) that I initially thought were Neal Adams cover, or one of Adams better US "imitators" of the time. it was only when I saw the signature I realised it was Jeff Aclin. The next time I remember seeing his work was in an issue of Iron Man with Don Newton (possibly inking his work or vice versa) then I read in a fanzine somewhere he did loads of UK splash pages and fill in work.

Hi Kid, hope you're well. I actually prefer the Titans cover in this case- the original is nice, but the Titans one really takes advantage of the landscape format and just feels a little more dynamic to me.

Jeff Aclin is a new name to me- looks like he mostly drew covers from what I can find online, but that's one of the things I like about old comics- there's always something I didn't know that pops up and surprises me.

Nice to see a new post here, even if its a one-off. Happy Easter, Kid!

My situation is a strain and a drain, McS, but there's no option but to just get on with it. Thanks for asking anyway. Perhaps I saw Jeff's name back in the day, but I have no memory of it now, which is probably another sign of my own deteriorating memory. Talking of Don Newton, I thought his Batman artwork was terrific, particularly when inked by Alfredo Alcala. Sad to think that neither of them are around now. Is Jeff Aclin?

Could be worse, DS, could be worse. Just tired all the time. I was lucky enough to buy a complete set of The Titans a couple or so years back for what worked out at less than a pound per issue, which has to be the bargain of that particular year. It could have been a tidier comic (it was a bit amateurish in the way it was thrown together), but it was good value for money. When I get a moment, I must have a look for more JA covers in the series.

Happy Easter to all three of you.

So you've posted 5 times since this blog has been "retired", but none featuring the "buxom babes" mentioned at the end of your header. How about some equal time?

Ah, but JfD, two of those posts were in my drafts file when I 'retired' the blog, one was sort of a 'public service announcement' - and two were about room posters that I just dashed off on the hoof. When it comes to Babes, I gotta pick the best for you - and that takes time going through my files. I can't just post any old burd.

It’s The Titans cover that gets my preference- and those extra speech bubbles show a bit of extra thought. I thoroughly liked The Titans. I had to spend a week in hospital in 1975 and had the first issue with me the whole time. It was all a bit chop and change along the way but a nice set to own. It had a surprise revival when the digest series came out a few years later. As a separate aside, did anyone ever see it stacked vertically on the newsagent shelf with the alternative logo at the top. I didn’t but the cover layout catered for it.

I believe I did see it at least once stacked vertically, CN, but I wouldn't bet my Kellogg's Thunderbird 2 on it. That's because it's always possible that my imagination is succumbing to the power of your suggestion, but I even seem to recall what newsagent's it actually was where I saw (and perhaps even bought) it. Sadly, that newsagent's is long gone and two other businesses now occupy the premises, which were split in two a few years back. I re-acquired a full set a couple or so years ago, though I still have the original #1 I bought in 1975.
