JIM REEVES was known as the man with the velvet voice - Mr. Velvet they called him (as well as Gentleman Jim). Today I received the above CD album from PICKWICK for a mere £2.99, free p&p, even though I already have the album on vinyl (twice, with different covers) and two different 'omnibus' CD sets. Then why buy it again? Well, on the other CDs it's one of two albums on the same CD in one instance, and one of four albums (on two CDs) in the other.
However, on one of those releases, the tracks have been remastered and the backing singers sound fainter, compromising the overall effect. Thankfully, my latest acquisition sounds just as it ought to, and it's good to have the album on an individual CD and to see the cover on its own, as opposed to sharing space with others.
Looking at the cover, I'd guess that the album was originally going to be called WELCOME To My WORLD, given Jim's pose (arms outstretched in welcome), and an EP single was released under that name with a cropped version of the same photo, which lends some credence to my speculation. (I've now added the EP cover, above.) It's a cracking album, and shows that Jim was more than just a country singer.
