SPECTRUM IS STILL GREEN...

Just had to show all you mad, mental Crivvies another of my recent acquisitions - a life-size Captain Scarlet pistol that looks great.  It's only a display model and doesn't fire any bullets (a bit like myself these days), but I love it.  In fact, I'm going to hug it and love it and call it George, and might even have its babies.  Anyway, remember - Captain Scarlet is indestructible - you are not!  So whaddya think, Crivs - would you like one of these guns?  Then straight to the comments section with you and tell us all why.

Update 9-9-'25: There's one currently on eBay so get over there right away by typing 'Captain Scarlet Spectrum Pistol - Gun' into eBay's search box - bidding ends on Wednesday at 18:38.

I'll start us off then. No, I wouldn't like one of these guns - because I've already got one.

Very nice Kid, is it official site or fan made? It's that authentic I was looking for your hand strings on the photo. Love the retro drapes in the background, I remember that pattern well.

It's a fan made replica, AAW. You should remember the curtains - I nicked them from your house.

What a nice job they've done, and with it being mainly white and red, you can legally walk in the street with it and not get shot by the armed response team. (forward thinking, by Mr Andersons designers). So it was you! You young whippersnapper. I did like those curtains, but I'll forgive you, due to your good taste in fabrics. Are you feeling better Kid? Your post ratio is up this week?

Kid said...

Not really feeling any better, but not feeling any worse, so that's a win. You'll notice all my recent posts are quite superficial without any philosophical depth to them, but I feel obliged to 'feed' you Crivs so have to come up with something.

Kid, do you remember the song 'Dancing In The Street' by David Bowie & Mick Jagger? Today is 40 years since it crashed straight in at No.1 on the UK singles chart. As for Captain Scarlet - I watched some episodes on BBC2 in the '90s but I was never much of a fan.

I do remember it, CJ, but wasn't much impressed by it. Captain Scarlet was a bit 'dark', as well as being the first Gerry Anderson show with realistically proportioned puppets, which perhaps was not the way to go seeing as how such shows (Joe 90) didn't seem to hit the heights of popularity that earlier shows achieved.

Live Aid was 13 July 1985 so I was curious why it took Dancing in the Street 6 weeks or so to get to No. 1. I had a quick Google and Madonna's Into the Groove was No. 1 for 4 of those weeks also from her success at Live Aid. From memory, I think it also went straight in at No. 1, I bought it and seem to remember it being sold out in many shops in my town.
Back to Captain Scarlet, I like the pistol very much but would prefer it if it was real so I could shoot Mysterons and other people I don't like. I like Gerry Anderson shows in general, although the Stanley Unwin one was a bit dodgylode and not too much deep joy. Stingray was my favourite, in particular Marina, a beautiful woman who doesn't speak. Heaven.

I used to be a big fan of the original Cap Scarlet when I was a kid, it was my favourite Anderson show but I don't recall the gun.

Jeez I can't believe that song was 40 years ago, then again Captain Scarlet was first show over 55 years ago. Where does the time go?

Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, and Stingray were my top favourites. Joe 90 was good, but he was too Milky bar kid for me. One things for sure, if the shows concept was pitched today, his dad would probably be accused of exploitation and child abuse with his brainwave transfer activity. (Still, we did have great TV back then!)

To this day I've never yet seen an episode of The Secret Service - apparently Lew Grade was horrified by it. I fancied Venus, Atlanta, Marina, and all the Angels - little perv that I was.

I've wrapped it up in a bag and keep it under my bed, McS. (Time, that is.) I think the gun is coloured after the one belonging to the Pedigree Captain Scarlet action figure - it may've been different colours in the TV show.

I thought Joe 90 was an irritating little cissy-boy who wore girlie dungarees and who needed a good slap. I think he was the only boy on a GA show who wasn't voiced by Sylvia Anderson.

Monty, the Bowie, Jagger single was released after Live Aid as it proved popular when the video, which was quickly arranged, was aired at Live Aid . However, they both had to go back into the studio to rerecord the song quality for the single release hence the delay before it reached number 1 in most countries ( number 7 in USA).

I liked the concept ( and theme tune) to Joe 90 but it wasn't Anderson's best. I did like Stingray back then.

That's hilarious! I may be reaching Kid, but you didn't like Joe 90 did you?

Kid said...

My favourites were Fireball XL5 and Stingray, McS, with Supercar and Captain Scarlet bringing up the rear. The theme tunes to most of the GA shows were usually great, I thought.

A face you'd never get tired of punching, AAW.

Joe 90 always makes me think of my grandmother's colour TV which she acquired as soon as colour TVs became available in the UK so I assume I must have watched Joe 90 on her TV. Joe 90 was the first Gerry Anderson show I ever watched and it has great opening credits in my opinion.

Kid said...

It may well have great opening credits, CJ (most GA shows do), but I can't remember them, even though I've got the DVD box set which I've still to watch, but Joe himself was a little pansy boy who looked as if he'd stolen Andy Pandy's pyjamas.

Colin Jones said...

If you hate Joe 90 why did you buy the DVD box set, Kid?

Kid said...

It's still part of my childhood, CJ, so I decided to buy all the Gerry Anderson box sets from Supercar right up to Joe 90. I didn't bother with The Secret Service 'cos it wasn't shown in Scotland back then. Might get the box set one day perhaps.

Kid said...

I also bought the UFO box set, though I was never a great fan of that series either. However, I'd never buy Space 1999, 'cos that was a load of old pants.

McSCOTTY said...

I forgot about UFO , I enjoyed that series a lot although that may had something to do with the Angels and in particular Aysha Brough!!! . I thought Space 1999 was ok but it didn't live up to the hype .

Kid said...

Angels were from Captain Scarlet, McS, though I don't know what the SHADO girls were called. In fact, it was probably because of them I bought the box set. Space 1999 just didn't 'live' at all - dead in the water.

Colin Jones said...

I love Space: 1999 but only the first season - the second season was never shown in my ITV region but I finally saw it when it was repeated on BBC2 in...yes, 1999. The second season was radically altered to make it much more action-oriented and less cerebral which totally spoiled the show in my opinion. I think this month marks 50 years since the first episode of Space:1999 was broadcast - I can't recall the exact date but I think it was sometime in September 1975.

Kid said...

I won't be celebrating, CJ - I hope you can forgive me. Nor will I ever buy the DVD box set.

I'll tell you what was bad, 'SPACE PRECINCT'. Now that was an extreme stinker! Never liked it.

Kid said...

Funnily enough, someone gave me it as a gift quite a number of years back now, but I've still never watched any of it, AAW. No immediate plans to, either.

Anonymous as well said...

For an experiment, I might have a re-watch via Youtube. I need to see if my views will mellow towards it? After all it was 31 years ago, that would be like last week for you Kid, with your cognitive memory skills...

Kid said...

And that's not too great an exaggeration, AAW, as 1994 does indeed still seem like a fairly recent period to me. A paradox of time, though, is that something can sometimes seem recent and 100 years ago at almost the same moment, depending on what end of a memory you approach it from (if that makes any sense).

Colin Jones said...

Space Precinct was indeed dreadful and I recall a letter in the Radio Times which said "this is the kind of show that gives science-fiction a bad name".

Anonymous as well said...

Kid, I think you're back! That was a deep analysis of the strange neural perceptions of time. Unfortunately my memories aren't that visually clear, just slightly hazy. I've now watched two episodes of Space Precinct, has mentioned. Well! blow me over, I may be warming to it, in my old age. Weirdly there's more blood and violence than I remember, but still quite entertaining with some decent creature and craft effects. Gerry, put some real love into this suprisingly, (serious) space cop show. But still, I can see why it's not everyone's cup of char! (Downside, there's two (bit part) kids in it, that you'd most probably want to punch?) Anyway, sleep well.

Kid said...

I think Dr. Who has now taken over that position, CJ, though it's often been pretty bad down through the years. However, we must remember to thank the show for giving us The Daleks, its one saving grace.

Kid said...

Nah, I was just stealing from myself, AAW, as I've often made that observation in various posts before. Yes, nothing beats a good bit of kiddie-punching (I'm told), though I've never done it myself. (Been tempted a few times but resisted.)
