CASTEL CRIVENS ACQUISITIONS...

All images and characters copyright their relevant and respective owners

Here are a few fairly recent Castel Crivens acquisitions for your perusal, loyal Crivvies.  I know most of you are always looking for recommendations on which to spend your money because you're all rich, so hopefully you'll see something you like the look of and rush out and buy it/them.  Now, I have a confession to make - the two Alan Class Creepy Worlds mags at the bottom of the post I already have, but I decided to buy superior condition copies - even though they cost far more than they're really worth and what I usually like to spend.  However, I got around a £50 discount and I decided to take the plunge, as it's unlikely I'll see such good clean condition copies going cheaper anywhere, now or in the future.

So let me ask of you - which of these publications would you purchase, either for yourself or as a present for someone?  Remember, Christmas isn't very far away - only 3 months in fact.

The interior colours seem too dark, so I'll have to compare with some old Look & Learns as I feel they should be brighter

I'll go first then, seeing as no one's biting. I'd buy 'em all - in fact, I DID!

I thought you avoided the modern Beano, Kid, because it's too woke but you've bought the 2026 annual?

I remember the FF cover featuring the Puppet Master from when that story and its' original cover was reprinted in The Complete FF - funny to think it was only about 15 years old at the time of the reprint.

I get the others Kid, but why the current woke Beano? I always use to put that on my Christmas purchase list along with the relatively unchanged Dandy, but stopped three years back, due to the new characters, crappy drawing styles and the characterisation, and name changes. It just didn't feel like the Beano should anymore? Has it now changed back? I would like to buy it again if so..

I don't think I ever said I stopped buying The Beano because it was too woke, CJ and AAW, the main reason I stopped buying it was because it was crap. However, look at the cover - it's 75 years of Dennis The Menace, which is mainly why I bought it. (And I only bought the Rupert book because it was the 90th edition.)

Hi Kid, there seems to be an issue with the back cover of The Beano & Dandy image. When I clicked on it, the front cover image came up.

I've just checked it at my end, JC, and it works as it should. If you're viewing the blog on your 'phone, scroll down 'til you see a message saying something like 'view on Blogger' and see how that works. I know the arrangement of posts isn't always as I laid them out when any of my friends try to read them on sources other than a laptop or computer screen.

Rupert is a still a classic, I had quite a few of the annuals, but the Beano is a disappointment now. Still, I do understand your reason for buying Kid, 75 years is a long time! Do you remember the brer Rabbit books? I had those as a child. Apparently it was banned at one point, due to some slavery connotation with a black character?

Kid, I'm also having the same issue, with the Beano/Dandy back cover. The others are fine. Very strange?

Kid said...

After checking it a few times it was working fine, but I decided to replace the images from my folder just to be sure, did so, checked again and it was still working as it should. Any problems, therefore, don't appear to be at my end as the one I click is the one that enlarges. Are you using a mobile or a laptop?

I usually always buy any classic Annuals when they celebrate an anniversary, AAW, even if I'm not buying the weekly comics (if there is one). I remember seeing and reading some Brer Rabbit books in primary school, though I don't think I've ever owned one.

Oops, JC and AAW, I obviously wasn't fully processing the info you were giving me. You clearly said Beano & Dandy back cover, but in my befogged state, I thought you were referring to The Beano Annual. I've now replaced the back cover of the B&D book and it seems to be working fine now. What am I like? Don't know why it wasn't working properly to begin with though.

I don't have any of these but I wouldn't say no to the Trigan Empire book. Did I read you correctly, you got £50 off those 2 Alan Class comics? Jeez what do these go for now!!!! Is Action Comics 23 a facsimile? If not that's a lovely original .

Kid said...

The Trigan Empire book is volume 6 in a 7 volume series, McS, so I only need the last one (not out yet) to complete the set. The typeset lettering has been neatly replaced with computer font resembling hand-lettering and the pages look better than ever. Yes, Action Comics 23 is a facsimile, and a very nice one indeed, despite not being the exact same dimensions as the original. What are the Alan Class comics going for now? Depends on condition of course, but I'm loath to reveal exactly what I paid for them as, despite the discount, it was still more than I'd have liked. (Hey, it's only money, eh?)

Forbidden Planet Glasgow have a few Alan Class comics on sale ranging from £7 to £20 each which I refused to even consider buying despite being interested in one title (100 pagers) containing Spiderman issue 77 (Spidey and Human Torch v the Lizard) at £20. May e it was a good deal. Yeah you could have spent that money on booze and fags, at least you have the comics , so enjoy.

Haven't been in to Glasgow for years so no trips to FP for me, McS, as my mobility is quite limited these days. It looks as though I'll have to consider getting a mobility scooter before too long, which will dig into my dosh for comics, drat! I suppose I'm quite fortunate in not being married with kids to support, nor do I go on holidays, so my money goes a wee bit farther (or should that be further - I can never remember) than most people's.

Incidentally, McS, the actual original US issue of Spidey #77 can be had for around £25/£30 on eBay, though there are far higher prices as well. True, the Class mags have loads of back-up stories, but they're all b&w. Astounding that some Class comics are sometimes as dear or dearer than the US originals, eh?

I think I’d plump for the Trigan Empire book, Kid. Mind you, I’ve only got the first volume, so I’d have to get volumes 2-5 first. It’s amazing the prices those Alan Class books are fetching, which must surely be purely for the nostalgia value from aging punters (of which cohort I’m presumably a member). I can’t see the books holding their value over time, compared to the original US comics. But I’m probably wrong.
I took a look at that Action Comics 23 facsimile last week, but decided to give it a pass as it wasn’t in the original dimensions. I think DC spoiled me with the recent Detective 27 facsimile in the close-to-original dimensions and “aged” paper

Kid said...

In my case, B, it's purely for the nostalgia aspect in regard to the Class mags as I definitely don't believe most of them are worth anywhere near the price asked for them. I don't think there are any others I particularly want, but I had these two as a kid and wanted better copies so decided to stump up the dosh.

Regarding the DC #27 facsimile, I wouldn't have minded 'clean' paper and sharper images as long as the images were as large as they were, but in the Superman GA 'facsimiles', the images had far too large a margin around them that it was pointless printing the mags in close-to-original dimensions.

I actually picked up the Marvel Tales versions of ASM # 76 and £77 for £6 instead of that Alan Class comic reprint Kid.

Kid said...

I've got them in my collection too, McS. I've got quite a number of Marvel Tales, including #1, and I started buying them again in the early '80s (when they reprinted the Ditko Tales) right up until they discontinued the mag in 1994. (Which means MT has been gone for longer than it was ever here.)

I haven't enjoyed the Beano and Dandy Annuals for some time. A friend would buy me both for Christmas but last year I asked him not to because I just wasn't interested. In addition to that, if I did want them from a collecting point of view, they are usually in the sales at a much cheaper price. I did think that I would continue with the Beano/Dandy retrospective books but even the last one of those I had was heading down the woke route so haven't bothered with that since. It's deeply disappointing.
I like the look of all the others but I just can't collect everything. I need to downsize. Mom is currently in the process of moving and it's surprising or even shocking the amount of stuff one accumulates over a lifetime. Ultimately someone has to deal with it.

Kid said...

I haven't even looked at The Beano Annual, M, I just got it 'cos it's been 75 years since Dennis first appeared. And as for the stuff one accumulates over a lifetime, tell me about it. I'll really need to have a clear-out one of these days.
