NO, HE DOESN'T MEAN MEXICANS, MELVIN!

Copyright MARVEL COMICS

I can't remember whether or not I've referred to this before, but I've intended to for a while now, so here it is.  It's the very first time the FF's flare gun signal has been used, and the cops in the 2nd last panel are seeing it as it happens, just like everyone else.  It's only been in the sky for mere seconds, perhaps a minute or two at most, but one of the cops states "Rumours are flyin' about an alien invasion!".  Come again?  There hasn't been time for any rumours to get started (much less for the cop to hear about them), and what's so alien about three English words in the sky?  H'm, methinks Stan boobed with this bit of dialogue, what say the rest of you?*

(*Obviously not much, going by the distinct lack of comments.)

One more thing: Look at the 'splash' panel, in particular the person standing between the woman and man both pointing at the flare.  The left shoulder of the 'in-betweener' appears to be in front of the woman, despite her being larger, which suggests this panel is a 'composite' of two different panels less than competently merged together.

******

Update: Just noticed I had indeed already referred to the flare gun and cops in an earlier post, but it was worth repeating in case anyone missed it.

I wouldn't be surprised at any new finding on FF #1, which has been minutely scrutinized for all of its possible progenitors. Then again, let's not forget that an issue later, Jack Kirby had four Skrulls fighting the FF and somehow managed to make one Skrull disappear. This forced Lee to jury-rig an "explanation" for the missing green guy that didn't work in the least. However, I confess that when I read the reprint in the later sixties, Young Me didn't even twig to the falsity of the rationalization-- just as Lee probably predicted would be the case with most young readers.

Back in 2012, GP, I did a post called 'The Mystery of the Missing Skrull', which offered my theories on that particular story. It never received even one comment, so if you'd like to take a read of it and offer your opinion, it would be most welcome. Off to my scratcher right now, so I'll respond to any further comments from anyone when I awaken.

The blonde pointing lady does indeed look out of proportion ...and doesn't appear to have been drawn by Kirby. I suspect production department tampering.

Sorry for delay in publishing and responding, Al, was at the dentist's. It wouldn't have been so obvious if her body had covered the youth's arm, instead of his arm overlapping the woman's body. I never paid much attention to it before, but I can't unsee it now. As you say, production department tampering, though probably at Stan's request.
