CORGI TOYS JB ASTON MARTIN D.B.5 (1968) REISSUE - Oh, Do Come Along, Double-O-Seven...

Behold - the Corgi Model Club's reissue of The New James Bond Aston Martin D.B.5 from 1968.  As something to look at and admire it's a nice little item, but not a patch on the original toy from back in the day.  So what's wrong with it then?  The ejector seat is nowhere near as powerful and the passenger barely clears the roof; the tire-slashers don't extend anywhere near as far (is that a contradiction-in-terms?) as on the '68 version; the overriders are a bit 'blocky' and lack the finesse of its '60s predecessor; the windscreen is narrower, and there are a couple of other disappointments.  Still, it'll look nice in your display cabinet so don't let little ol' me put you off acquiring one for your collection.  Quick - before Goldfinger bites you on the bum!

(This is the gold grille & bumper edition, the silver grille & bumper version will be arriving soon.)

Also nice. There's a real one here if you'd like? And they don't mention Bond once, which I would have thought was a selling point. Selling such an iconic vehicle and not mentioning the reason it's iconic, well I tip my hat to them.

Used 1964 ASTON MARTIN DB5 for sale - PistonHeads UK https://share.google/xmAWI4MgVWPicVIlQ

I'll take wee look at that link shortly, M, thanks. There used to be a car showroom in Glasgow (might still be there, dunno, it's been such a long time since I've been in) that had a D.B. 5 for sale. Don't even think it was that expensive for a car, never mind an iconic one. That was around 20 years ago, though, now that I think about it - only seems like four or five to me.

Are you collecting every Corgi facsimile that comes out, or just the ones you had first time around, Kid?

Since I joined the club, I've received every model they've produced, B, though as I didn't join right away, I'm a couple of models behind. To be honest, I'm receiving far too many imperfect models (especially ones with working features) which really should have been rejected before being sent to me, but they're quick to replace them with better condition ones if I point the flaws out to them. I may go through my collection and jettison some of them, because not all of them are 'keepers' and I'm running out of space.

I couldn't remember if you'd got the Airfix model, I just saw it on Hot UK Deals.

I bought it around 25-plus years ago, M. Still haven't started to build it yet. Got loads of model kits waiting for my touch.

Today (Feb 7th) is 50 years since the final issue of SMCW before it transformed into Super Spider-Man & The Super-Heroes.

Do you keep a diary of all theses dates, CJ, or just have an amazingly good memory? Guess what? Back in the '70s, I gave my recently-deceased pal, Joe, my full run of Captain Britain, plus quite a few Super Spider-Man & Captain Britain issues. A few years later, I obtained another full run of CB's, which I still have. However, now that poor ol' Joe's dead, I got back my first set of CBs, so now have two sets, along with a batch of SSM&CB weeklies. So they found their way back to me.

Congratulations, Kid. I too had every issue of Captain Britain but it started going downhill after #13 in my opinion. I don't need to keep a diary of dates as I've always had a good memory which I inherited from my mother - by contrast my father had a truly atrocious memory as I've previously mentioned.

So did you actually remember, unprompted, that February 7th was the 'final' ish of SMCW? And was that the date on the cover, or the date (which would've been the week before - 31st January) it actually 'ended'?

Colin Jones said...

Yes, I remembered unprompted - February 7th 1976 was exactly 10 days before my 10th birthday so maybe that helped me remember? The date on the cover was Week Ending February 14th 1976.

I used to have a memory like that, CJ, but it's been deteriorating for a few years now. Probably won't be long 'til my mind's a cabbage.
