BABE Of The DAY - CHRISTEL BODENSTEIN...

Ah, Christel Bodenstein - a good
old British name if ever there was one!
Anyone remember her from The Singing
Ringing Tree ?  I first saw this classic 60
years ago, which makes me feel very old,
even though I look only around 40.  (In
my fevered imagination anyway.)

I've got the Tales From Europe DVD Box Set which has this and The Tinderbox in it. I have scant memories of original broadcasts but I do remember it and mainly the narrator's voice (in English) and the mismatched dialogue and mouth movements.

That's the very one I've got too, M. I seem to recall it saying The Tinderbox wasn't shown in the UK, but I'm almost sure I saw it on TV back in the '60s or '70s. Regarding The Singing Ringing Tree (sometimes rendered with commas, sometimes without), I saw it when it was first broadcast in 1964 and again in the '70s sometime. It was split into three weekly parts and though it was originally shot in colour, most people saw it in black and white on its first airing (at least). I think the first two times I saw it, it was in b&W 'cos we only had a b&w telly at the time. I also seem to remember seeing one of the episodes in the early '80s, but without the credits as it was part of a programme that just launched into it at some point, with only an announcer's voice introducing it.

Just looked on BBC genome and it shows The Tinderbox broadcast in 1970 and 1972. I'm almost sure I remember it from 1972 although no detail except black and white.

Did each episode have stills of previous episodes with the narrator doing a recap? I seem to remember that.

It was first shown in the '60s, M - I think the DVD boxed set gives the date. I can't say with any certainty whether it was 1970 or '72 I saw it again, but I think it was '70. And it was shown again as part of a programme in the late '70s or early '80s, though it may not have been by BBC. The three episode version was in black and white so even if you had a colour TV, viewers only saw it in B&W. Can't recall if there was a visual recap (though I imagine there would've been), but I think there was an audio one.

That show is ingrained in my memory. Like yourself I saw the Singing ringing tree in the early/mid 1960s and was fascinated by it . I remember it as being very strange and the man that was turned into a bear ( traumatised me - looking at the still pics on the internet I cant see why that was as he looks like a cute bear, maybe as I would have seen this first time around in b&w that made it all the more surreal to my then young mind. Saying that as a 4 or 5 year old I loved it.

The two great (originally foreign) TV shows of the mid-'60s are The Singing Ringing Tree and The Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe. I don't think anyone who saw them back then ever forgot them. Can't say I was ever traumatised by 'Tree', though I was certainly fascinated by it. I've got the original colour movie version (with English narration), but i wish I had the three-part BBC version as well.

Very true those Robinson Crusoe shoes were sublime a hai ting theme tune and wonderful narration. Possibly my favourite show as a child That wasn't a cartoon

The Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe was shown in the '70s too because I remember watching it and I definitely remember the wonderful theme tune.

I'm lucky enough to have the DVD, as well as the soundtrack CD, McS. Great stuff. Some other countries (like the US) got it in four parts with different music. It's hard to imagine it without the theme we got.

Yeah, I think I saw it again then too, CJ, though I probably didn't watch every episode.

Today is 50 years since the final issue of Savage Sword Of Conan weekly (#18) came out.

Kid said...

And 50 years later, I still have my original issue, CJ, along with the previous 17. (And it's in better condition than me.)

McSCOTTY said...

Jeez 50 years! that's scary it only seems like a few years ago I picked up the first issue.

Kid said...

And it only gets scarier as time passes, McS, and it passes far too quickly the older we get. Maybe we should start taking bets now as to who'll outlive the others - me, you, or CJ?

Didn't you say your mother is over 100 years old, Kid? Apologies if I've got that wrong but, if correct, you've got a big advantage over me in the longevity stakes as my parents died aged 71 and 77 so I'm not expecting a telegram from King William in 2066.

It may be 50 years since the last issue of the Conan weekly but coincidentally it's 40 years since the last issue of the UK Conan monthly which was dated July 1985 so it would have been on sale in late June '85.

103 to be exact, CJ. And with Alzheimer's and cancer, in a care home which seems incapable of rendering a consistent standard of care. One day I shall reveal all and it'll make for shocking reading.

Incidentally, I've got that last issue of the monthly as well. Where did the time go?

McSCOTTY said...

103 wow sorry your mum's so ill. My mum's last days in hospital were a disgrace . As to who will life longest, well I've had a heart attack and left with a few issues so not looking good for me altho I'm healthier than I have been in years as I exercise most days, am at right weightr, abd eat a mostly healthy diet etc... that means very little though lol. Do like younger than the 2 of us isn't he only 50 summit?

Kid said...

Yeah, but CJ's fond of the whisky, sherry, and has too many late nights visiting blogs, McS. If you ask me, he'll go first. (That'll maybe prompt him to prove me wrong.)

McSCOTTY said...

....and Dandylion and Burdock those sugary drinks are lethal lol

Colin Jones said...

I don't drink very much alcohol these days, Kid - only about 5 bottles in the whole of 2025 so far!

Kid said...

I can't remember the last time I had a bottle of that stuff, McS. Must keep an eye out for one and remind myself what it tastes like.

Kid said...

Yeah, but I hear the bottles you buy are the size of a bus, CJ. You're not foolin' us.
