YET MORE CASTEL CRIVENS ACQUISITIONS...

Characters and images copyright relevant and respective owners

September 30th is the 60th Anniversary of Thunderbirds being first broadcast on UK TV so there's quite a bit of merchandise around at the moment - diecasts, model kits, and books, etc.  The tome above, though featuring comic strips that have been reprinted before over the years, is probably the best yet and contains some interesting articles.  Sadly it misnames TV Comic's Bill Mevin as Bill Melvin, and describes TV Century 21's Supercar strip as consisting of one-page, though it was actually one-and-a-half (to begin with anyway).  I've only had a cursory look so far (just arrived this afternoon) so there'll likely be other errors in the text as is usually the case in such publications.  Anyway, still nice to have and roll on volume two.

Being a lazy buggah, I'm usually inclined to take shortcuts, hence my inclusion of the back cover, above, which gives the publisher's spiel about the contents, saving me from having to go into any detail about them myself.  That should give you a fair idea of what to expect should any of you decide to add this heavy volume to your own collections.  Hefty books come at a hefty price, but it's worth it to recapture a piece of your childhood - if you're as old as me, that is.

As you'll all know by now, Marvel is reprinting the first dozen issues of The Fantastic Four in Facsimile Editions and the most recent one is #9, above.  I've so many various memories of this tale associated with its different reprintings down through the decades - Wham!, Marvel Collector's Item Classics, The Mighty World Of Marvel, The Complete Fantastic Four, etc., that it's almost like I've lived several lives with which some incarnation of this tale (b&w, full colour, spot colour, Zipatone) is associated.  Yeah, we're all familiar with the story, but it's nice to have in an individual issue fashioned after its original printing.

The first of the trio of tales included in the fourth issue of Fantastic Four Fanfare is an absolute belter and not to be missed.  And the other two strips ain't bad either so grab it while you can.  Susie is presented as probably the most powerful member of the team - by a long chalk - and that's okay with me as I still fancy her from when I was a lickle kidlet.  Sincerely, don't let this one get away from you.  Well, that's all for now, I'll keep you updated on anything I think you should know about.  Excelsior!

Thunderbirds looks a good book. I've seen quite a few videos on YouTube recently about the anniversary and new blu ray release. The one I saw last night was Nicola Bryant and Sophie Aldred discussing Thunderbirds. I had my photo took with Nicola a few years back. Colin Baker was also there but I was more interested in Nicola. He he. Unfortunately she had a black eye at the time after slipping in the hotel shower but I never noticed on the photo. She mentioned it on her Twitter account later on. Not that I'm stalking her. 😁

I'm always suspicious when anyone attributes a black eye to a fall, M. Who do you think hit her? She must be the sexiest Dr. Who companion ever.

I think she's blissfully happy being single unless Colin gave her a fourpenny one. She was married but it didn't last. I did have a thing for Janet Fielding back in the day but yes I agree Nicola tops the list.

Happy being single? Ah, but she hasn't met me yet.

I bought the first 3 issues of FF Fanfare and thought they were pretty good comics with some great artwork. I find it easier to read smaller tales now as I lose interest in new books around page 7( not that I buy many new comics nowadays) But next time I'm in Glasgow I'll check out issue 4 .

Is it the comics nowadays or is it us, McS? I find most new comics tough going a lot of the time and these FFF tales are just the right length, though sometimes they're just too 'lite' and whimsical. However, if you don't enjoy the lead story in FFF #4 (which has a bit of depth to it) then I'll turn in my FOOM card.

I was in Glasgow yesterday but FF Fanfare #4 was sold out ( as was issue 2 which I have) . Good to know today's better comics are doing well.

Kid said...

Are there any other comic shops in Glasgow, McS, where you could maybe get FFF #4? It would be a shame if you missed it.

Only City Centre Comics but I don't go to the west end of the city that often. I'm sure I'll see it at some point though Kid as off to Brighton in October for a wee break.

I wasn't sure whether CCC was still there or not, McS, as I haven't been into Glasgow in such a long time. I've built up that FFF story to such an extent, you'll probably wonder what I saw in it when you eventually read it.

All your recent acquisitions get the thumbs up from me. My latest acquisition - the Huckleberry hound complete series 11 disc blu ray set may be of interest to you. Watching Huckleberry, yogi and pixie and dixie is bringing back many happy memories for me.

Kid said...

I quite fancy that, AL, though I'll have to watch my Yogi Bear DVD set before I think about acquiring any more sets - I've only had it for years now.

My local Tesco has started selling Christmas food but only in a very limited way so far. I'm thinking of buying a box of mince pies - summer doesn't officially end until the autumnal equinox on Monday evening so I could buy some mince pies while it's still summer!

Kid said...

I'm all for you buying a big box of mince pies, CJ. Just make sure you wrap them carefully when you post them to me. Sluuuuuurp!

Visited my local, Wood/DIY/Decor merchant today, and they were in mid throws of setting up their Christmas displays, 'Stop the world, I want to get off!' Kid, is Castel Crivens having a Christmas display blog this year, to match last year? I enjoyed the classic festive vibe it gave. 'Hope you're feeling ok? Mince Pies, just what the doctor ordered.'

My local Iceland has Christmas cakes and stuff on sale and it's only September - what's the world coming to? Doubt I'll have a display this year 'cos it'd be pretty much the same as last year, AAW. Having said that, I'll likely have some kind of nod to Christmas, but not the living-room again. Not feeling great to be honest, but there are loads of people far worse than me.

We were in the Clyde Valley tourist area on the first week in September and the posh garden centres were setting up their Xmas displays, 2 of them had Christmas trees and decorations already on sale ( incidentally the trees were all over £700) I'm not sure what was more shocking the early Christmas display or the fact folk can and are willing to pay so much for trees

There is now Christmas stuff in most stores along with Halloween sweets, masks etc.

Kid said...

I don't think I've seen any Hallowe'en or Guy Fawkes stuff yet, McS, but it's always possible I just haven't noticed it. £700 for a tree? What's it made of - gold? (Though some might say the same about my comics.) Were they artificial trees or real ones? Know what I miss? Comics with free gifts inside of Guy Fawkes masks. Ah, the good old days.

McSCOTTY said...

They were artificial trees Kid. Some of the garden centres sell high end goods with the appropriate price tags, we go to look at the impressive displays and for tea and a toastie treat lol. We picked up Halloween sweets for friends and family kids last week . I 'm always amazed that there are Christmas shops that are open all year long there's one in Edinburgh and Pitlochry ,-who buys Christmas things in July?

I miss those comics as well Kid.

Kid said...

I didn't realise there were year-round Christmas shops, McS - you learn something new every day, eh? Who buys Christmas things in July? Probably those who know they're not going to be around after August.

Well, I've done it! I've actually lived to see the obscene bastardisation of two annual winter traditions. I popped out for a meal at a nearby eating establishment this evening, and what did I see?........'A ruddy, Halloween Christmas tree!' That's right! A (Black) Christmas tree, covered in plastic cobwebs, spiders, skeletons and orange fairy lights, what the heck was I looking at? I assume when Octobers done, they'll just remove the horror shite, and load up the same tree with fairies and tinsel. Truly amazing....what's acceptable in these modern progressive times?

Kid said...

And Hallowe'en's still over a month away. What were they thinking of? The only thing worse would be a Guy Fawkes sitting atop the tree - then they'd have killed three birds with one stone.

On this cultural slippery slope of erasing tradition, that will probably happen next year, Kid? That's assuming the current UK government doesn't deem the 5th of November as, Far Right, Political Terrorism and ban Bonfire Night all together? 'Who knows?' Heh, Heh! 'Sleep well, Kid!'

Kid said...

Will do. Off to my scratcher right now. Cheers.

There's a shop in Stirling called Tinsel &Tartan which is open all year. We bought a couple of things from there, tree decorations, one was bagpipes and the other was Nessie. I think it was September when we went. Lovely lady in there, I think she relies a lot on tourists.

Kid said...

I wonder if Christmas seems the same when you're surrounded by Christmas decorations all year round?

Monty said...

I have seen that where someone leaves the Christmas decorations up all year round, or have Christmas Day every day. Also I saw a family once who loved moving house so much that they did it every year, sometimes twice in one year. Imagine not only the stress but the cost involved? You're looking at just under £10k to move house now.
Sadly Christmas is not the same for me anymore, just a load of work and driving. Even the TV is rubbish.

Kid said...

A couple of Christmases back, I left my decorations up all year 'cos I didn't have the strength to climb the stepladders up into the loft. I'll have to think about cleaning out the cupboard under the stairs and storing them in there. Who could possibly love moving house every year, sometimes twice? Surely only a family of idiots. I don't watch any Christmas TV any more - as you say, it's rubbish.
