Arrived today, these two great facsimile editions of The Amazing Spider-Man #s 121 & 122, featuring the death of Gwen Stacy. Marvel have done themselves (and us) proud with these issues, as not only do they contain the 'Continued Next Page' lines of the originals, but also the ads, as well as the 'plugs' for other comics at the foot of the pages (which all Marvel mags had for a time in the '70s). Of course, I already have various single issue and collected edition reprints of these two tales, but having them exactly as originally presented is a plus - especially if, like me, you don't own the originals. It would cost a pretty penny or two to purchase the '70s printings, so having these two facsimiles is the next best thing (and least expensive option). Buy 'em today!
Yes, mine arrived today aswel and they are indeed great reproductions of the originals. I don't own the originals but i'm still looking forward to reading these 2 landmark issues again.

ReplyDeleteI bought issue 121 today in Glasgow its certainly a nice looking comic. I'll read it later. I was tempted to pick up issue 122 and the Iron-Man facsimile as well but I am trying to cut back on comics.
ReplyDeleteAch, you can't have #121 without 122, McS. They're connected, story-wise. If you cut back on comics, you're cutting back on what makes life enjoyable, but whatever you do, don't cut them out completely.
ReplyDeleteThese facsimiles look awesome. I get some of them, but I let others by. You have me reconsidering these Spidey issues. I had the originals once upon a time, but no longer. I do have them in other reprints though. The deaths of Gwen Stacey so quickly after the demise of her father was a real one-two blow in the day.
ReplyDeleteThe next facsimile I want is DC's My Greatest Adventure #80 with the debut of The Doom Patrol, RJ, even though I've got the original. Only one UK dealer seems to be selling it, but it's an advance order as it's not due to be available in Britain until the 5th or 6th of this month, even though it's on sale in the US.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up, otherwise I would have missed out. I bought a facsimile copy of 122 earlier today, from the LCS near my work in Airdrie. I also have various reprints of the story from 122 (UK Super Spider-Man 171, UK Spider-Man Annual 1984, US Marvel Tales 99), however looking forward to reading an exact reproduction c/w adverts & letters. Fortunately, I already have an original copy of 121 bought at a Glasgow comic mart many years ago.

Glad to be able to assist in your procurement of #122, BD. I too have various reprints of both comics, but the facsimile editions are the best yet, in my view. When the stories were reprinted in Marvel Tales, the colours were too garish so it's good to see them more like they should be - even better than their original printings in fact. No contemporary comics currently appeal to me, it's mainly a mixture of back issues and facsimiles I buy at the moment.
ReplyDeleteGotta get these! I gave a friend # 122 a couple of years ago, just because I wanted him to have something from my collection. (I originally bought it for 20 cents back in the day!). Hated Gwen's death, loved Gil's art! To me, Spidey was never the same after, and I soon lost interest. Gosh, that was so very long ago!

ReplyDeleteHave just finished reading #122, having purchased #121 a few weeks earlier, and thoroughly enjoyed reading them both for the first time! As you've mentioned so many times, Kid, these things can take you back in time. In my case, I stopped collecting ASM on a regular basis with #120, as World Distributors stopped importing them to the UK for seven years at that point. So reading #121 and then #122 was just like picking up the next issue back in 1973. Oh that Marvel would continue these facsimiles on an on-going basis!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait until they do a facsimile of Journey Into Mystery #83, B - the debut and origin of Thor. I've got the original, various reprints of it in collected editions, Fantastic, SMCW, Marvel Tales, etc., plus several copies of the True Believers version from a few years ago. I just love that story to bits. Long may the facsimiles continue, as they're about the only comics worth buying these days. As the Likely Lads theme says - it's the only thing to look forward to - the past.
