A cascading cornucopia of cool comics, crazy cartoons, & classic collectables - plus other completely captivating & occasionally controversial contents. With nostalgic notions, sentimental sighings, wistful wonderings, remorseful ruminations, melancholy musings, rueful reflections, poignant ponderings, & yearnings for yesteryear. (And a few profound perplexities, puzzling paradoxes, & a bevy of big, beautiful, bedazzling, buxom Babes to round it all off.)

Aww that is sad another true legend of comic art gone. For me anything with his name attached was always quality. Kirby and Sinnot FF was one of, if not the best comic out there.Really enjoyed his Thor work with John Bucema and his work with Steranko as well Condolences to all his friends and of course family.
ReplyDeleteAnd he was also a good artist in his own right, McS, but his inking on Thor's debut (in J.I.M. #83) and on the FF (he inked #5 and a few panels in #6, before taking over as regular inker with #44) was truly excellent. A sad loss.
ReplyDeleteVery sad news. I recently listened to a podcast with an interview with Mr Sinnott and he sounded such a nice fella. I believe he spent a lot of his spare time organising baseball teams for children.
ReplyDeleteHe was the inker on one of the first US comics that I ever bought new (as opposed to second-hand): West Coast Avengers #12, bought in WHSmith in Argyle Street in Glasgow, which I still own.
Thanks Joe, rest well.
He was also a huge Bing Crosby fan, DS - don't know what he thought of Deep Purple.
ReplyDeleteI may have that issue myself, will have to check when I get time.
Hi Kid, so sad that another Marvel Legend has left the Bullpen for good. If Joe Sinnott's name was included in the credit box you knew the art would be of a guaranteed high standard.
ReplyDeleteCheers Joe,
Duncan
Not many left, are there, D? Stan, Jack, Steve, Don, John B, Gene - and that's just the Marvel legends. At least we'll still have their work to enjoy for many years to come, but it's a shame that they're not still around themselves.
ReplyDeleteYes, a classic inker but I can't recall any of his own art, Kid. Where did his art appear?
ReplyDeleteHe drew for various publishers, CJ, but at Marvel, he drew Thor in Journey Into Mystery for several issues, before Jack Kirby returned to the title after Don Heck.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing to think that, for all the people the comics field has sadly lost, we still have a couple of people left from the Timely/Atlas days in Larry Lieber and John Romita.
ReplyDeleteIt's only just occurred to me that Mr Sinnott's Bullpen nickname - Joltin' Joe - may have been based on Joltin' Joe DiMaggio. A fitting name for a baseball fan!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that that reference would have been pretty obvious to most people, but I've literally just recognized it!
This popped into my mind because I heard Simon and Garfunkel's Mrs Robinson earlier, which contains the line "Joltin' Joe has left and gone away", which reminded me of Joe Sinnott.
Certainly possible, DS, though I tend to think it was more down to the alliterative nature of the nickname when combined with the first name. For example, Jolly Jack, Sturdy Steve, Dashing Don, Lilting Larry, Jazzy John, Nifty Neal, Genial Gene, etc.
