Yes, I know we saw STEED in the last batch, but I thought I'd show him again along with his sidekick, Mrs. EMMA PEEL. I've just taken these photos in my hall, and the flash (I assume) has given the skin tones on some of them rather strange hues - perhaps I should've waited 'til daylight and taken them outside, but too late now 'cos here they are.
Look at the size of JOE 90 in the above pic - he's surely the tallest 9 year-old schoolboy in the world (or the smallest, depending on how you look at it). And cop a gander at the MEGO SUPERMAN below - isn't that DEAN MARTIN in fancy dress? The middle figure is CAPTAIN ACTION as The LONE RANGER in case you were wondering.
And down below we have SUSAN STORM, The INVISIBLE GIRL - now that's what I call a woman! (What's that? Oh, yeah - I forgot for a moment. What I meant is, now that's what I call a poseable figure.) Unfortunately, her clothes are moulded on, but you can't have everything.
More action figures as soon as I find them, Criv-ite chums. Don't forget to come back and check out some of my poseable treasures. You know it makes sense.

ReplyDeleteActually, PS, they were ALL hard to find - 'cos they were buried in boxes in my attic and I didn't know which ones.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that the Captain Black figure seems to have been based on how he looked before being Mysteronised. Maybe the manufacturers thought that the Mysteron Black, with his sinister, dead, sunken eyes and pale lifeless complexion would be too much for the kiddies to handle.

One of my favourite Captain Scarlet episodes is called Special Assignment, where Captain Scarlet is forced to resign from Spectrum due to large gambling debts and takes to hanging around pubs in a depressed state, drinking on his own. It turns out be a set-up, but even so, it's hard to imagine a kid's TV show these days doing an episode like that!
The Captain Black figure has the suggestion of stubble around his chin, DS, so he's meant to represent the Mysterionised Black. The trouble is, these figures are more like dolls than articulated action figures, having been done on the cheap, hence them looking like wide-eyed (I hate using the word) dolls. Compared to the '60s Pedigree Captain Scarlet figure, the Vivid Imagination ones are rubbish.
ReplyDeleteI've got the boxed DVD set of Captain Scarlet episodes, had it for years, still haven't watched any - must get around to starting some day.
I'll try and get your comic in the post today. I hope you wont be too disappointed with it - it really is beat up. However, it's better than it was when I got it (which you'll find hard to believe when you see it).

ReplyDeleteI have the Dvd set of Captain Scarlet too and actually watched that episode this morning since I had mentioned it -it starts with Captain Black driving into a petrol station and casually reversing his car over the pump attendant, crushing him to death- definitely wouldn't get on kids tv these days! I think CSATM was the best thing Gerry Anderson made, great creepy atmosphere with genuinely sinister baddies.
Curiously, the more realistic the puppets became, the less popular the programmes seemed to be with the kids. Yeah, Captain Scarlet was good, but my all time favourites are Fireball XL5 and Stingray. Wish they'd get around to colourising more than just one episode of XL5.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, comic's in its cardboard-backed envelope and will go in the post later this afternoon. Yeah, it's certainly readable and will look okay sitting atop a pile, but it's not at its best.
yes XL5 was one of my favourite too...Probably because it was the one I associate with my childhood.. Captain Scarlet onwards was so so.. I believe Thunderbirds was when Anderson puppetry peaked.. Sorry if I upset any Thunderbirds fans but sorry team I thought the actual Thunderbird machines were ugly looking things.. Who am I..
ReplyDeleteI think the Thunderbirds designs were quite nifty, LH, but Stingray is one that I find hard to imagine ever being improved on. It's just so darn good. On the blog somewhere is a picture of what Fireball XL5's original design was like when it was called Century 21. It's not too different, but looks slightly more futuristic. Take a wee look and let me know what you think.
ReplyDeleteA very good article..Century 21 is as you say more futuristic looking of the two but what it looked like on B/W television may be the reason for a color change and as for the name I suspect they thought kids of 5 upwards would relate more to the word Fireball than Century..Century does not sound as exciting as Fireball when your 6 ... Fireball XL5 was a great series..My favourite episode being Hypnotic Sphere..Love the Brain in the bottle!!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think the colour changes would've made much of a difference on '60s b&w TV, LH, but I certainly agree that Fireball XL5 is a better name. I wonder which came first - the new name or colour scheme? Whichever it was, one probably influenced the other.
