THE GREATEST COMIC BOOK COVERS OF ALL TIME!

Images copyright their respective owners

Here's a wee something I picked up in a local comicbook store today.  (Better watch that, I'll likely get caught one day!  Joke.)  As you can see, it's a book called The GREATEST COMIC BOOK COVERS Of ALL TIME! - a slim volume, but with some nice covers within its pages.  It was difficult deciding which examples to show you, but in the end, I decided to go with a couple from the CHEESY CHEESECAKE section, so here they are.  Now if these don't convince you to seek out a copy of this COMIC BUYER'S GUIDE presentation, nothing will.

What would be your 20 greatest covers of all time?

I think it would be fun if you post some of these covers as representative of certain styles or eras. I know I ended the list early before I got to Adams or Corben and no Ditko or Colan but I think their best work was inside the covers.

Kid said...

I know most of them, Phil, but there are two or three that don't immediately ring a bell. That's certainly an idea for a future post.

Some interesting choices there, Chris, particularly as they're all British comics. (I've got at least half of them.) Would I be right in assuming that you're not really into American comicbooks?

Phil said...

So interesting none of us share any covers! My excuse is I ran out of time at 1968.

Kid said...

I suppose the choices are subjective, Phil, and represent the covers that made an impression on people as they were growing up, but I did expect a few 'doublers' and that doesn't seem to have happened. Although, had I made it 100 covers, there would no doubt have been a few examples of comic covers snap.

Phil said...

Yes and btw I'm not 80 years old, but I did see a lot of the golden age covers in Steranko's history of comics which left a deep impression on me.

Kid said...

I'm not 80 years old either, Phil, but I feel like it sometimes. Ooh, my bones creak.

Crispynev said...

On the contrary Kid, I love American comics and amassed Silver, Bronze and Modern

Kid said...

Ah, right, Chris, then let's have a list of what you consider the best 8 U.S. covers - that'll make up 20 added to the 12 you've already listed.

Crispynev said...

I'm up for the challenge Kid so here goes....

Incredible Hulk Annual 1
Uncanny X-Men 141
Fantastic Four 26
Kingdom Come 1
Avengers 4
Planet of the Apes mag 2 (UK POTA 1)
Tales to Astonish 59
Incredible Hulk 377

Kid said...

And I do believe I see at least one that's in another list, Chris, so we're finally seeing some agreement on what constitutes a great cover.

John Pitt said...

Kid, you know I love lists, but, as McS says it's a near impossible task. So I am going to do 20 comics I bought, because the covers grabbed me.
Leave it with me.

Kid said...

The countdown has begun, JP.

John Pitt said...

Kid said...

What, no pictures? Now I'll have to look them up. Some interesting choices as far as the ones I recognize 'though.

John Pitt said...

I would have actually liked to have posted the URLs, but I only know how to add one link per post.
The 2000ad isn't on GCD, but everything else is. I got that off 2000ad.org
