KLASSIC KIRBY KOMIC KOVERS - 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY...

To be honest, I'm surprised that JACK KIRBY agreed to do this TREASURY EDITION (assuming it wasn't his own idea) because it's generally believed that he didn't really like working on other people's concepts and preferred to do his own thing.  Whatever the case, he did do it, and most readers seem to like it.  What did you think?

I've never read this but I have seen the film which I first saw on New Year's Day 1982 (it was also my parents' 28th wedding anniversary). I thought the ending was totally baffling but I've had it explained to me since so I understand it more now. The most recent time I saw the film was in 1999 - I was watching it with my father and he hated it and said "I'm never watching this again !!" - he died about two months later so he got that right. I love 2001 though and isn't HAL wonderfully creepy - "I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that". By the way, Kid, I left a comment on MMMM - in case you don't get an e-mail alert.

I never actually read this treasury edition but did pick up a few of the "2001" monthly (bi monthly) comics at the time (as to be honest they were the only comics left) and I quite liked them, some nice Kirby latter day art as well - I still have them. Ive seenpages from the treasury and the look good.

I don't think I've ever seen the movie itself, CJ. Only clips of it. I've answered your other comment by the way.

I've got all of these issues, McScotty. Read them, can't remember a thing about them, apart from Mister Machine/Machine Man first appearing in them.

Got this issue on my shelf, the 75p version. I liked it, Kirby drew off the wall larger than life stuff so if anyone was going to do it, he was. Also. Look at that page with the apes and the spaceman and the spaceship. It's quite spectacular despite having too many things going on.

I wasn't really a fan of Kirby's art during this period, Phil - it was just a bit too abstract for me. There are some nice images in the mag 'though.

Although I like the film 2001 it's quite slow and cerebral so a comics version wouldn't have had much action in it - it would be interesting to read this Kirby version just to see what it's like. I left another MMMM comment, Kid.

It seems an odd choice for Kirby, CJ. Surprisingly, he included scenes from the book that weren't in the movie.

Kid, the book of 2001 was Radio 4's Book At Bedtime for the first two weeks of...er, 2001. The big difference is that the spaceship travels to Saturn not Jupiter as in the film. I've also read the three sequels - 2010, 2061 and 3001 but in those it was Jupiter that was the important planet, I think they were really sequels to the film rather than the original story.

Thanks for the info, CJ. I've still got an old cassette tape of the soundtrack to the film which I bought in the '70s. As to why I bought the soundtrack when I hadn't seen the movie, I'm not quite sure. I suppose I bought it because I had the Treasury Edition - that makes sense.

I didn't get round to seeing the flick till around 1981-2 ish, while it was on its final tour before being shown on the box. The comics, kinda passed me by at the time of their issue, yeah I saw 'em but I wasn't that fussed about it. Kinda regret it now I've picked up some hints about the content of the later issues. Did make an attempt to pick them up about a month or so ago, while I was flush but couldn't quite get it the timing for the bid together.

If I recall correctly, DSE, there were only about ten or eleven issues, so it might be worth investigating whether they've been collected in book form.
