A cascading cornucopia of cool comics, crazy cartoons, & classic collectables - plus other completely captivating & occasionally controversial contents. With nostalgic notions, sentimental sighings, wistful wonderings, remorseful ruminations, melancholy musings, rueful reflections, poignant ponderings, & yearnings for yesteryear. (And a few profound perplexities, puzzling paradoxes, & a bevy of big, beautiful, bedazzling, buxom Babes to round it all off.)

As a lifelong Marvel devotee I've never had much interest in DC characters but obviously I recognize Superman as the first super-hero (even though he is a bit crap). What's really weird is that we are now more distant from 1974 when I discovered super-heroes than 1974 was from 1938 when they were invented.
ReplyDeleteIt's the same with Marvel - I discovered Fantastic Four only five years after they'd first appeared, and that was nearly 50 years ago. Scary! Superman's only crap now, CJ - he was good when Denny O'Neil wrote him.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved the expression on the face of the guy at the front. He completely steals the scene for me!
ReplyDeleteFor such an iconic cover, I don't remember it being copied too often- I remember John Byrne doing a homage on one of his later FF covers, but off the top of me head can;t think of any others...
There's been a few, DD. The FF one, a Spidey one, and a Popeye one - and there's bound to have been more. The Popeye cover is in the Comic Covers Snap series on this blog somewhere. Type Popeye in the Blogger search box in the top left-hand corner of my home page.
