Where's Nifty NICK CAPUTO when you need him? This should be right up his street as Nick is an expert at identifying all the artists who drew the covers, splash pages and pin-ups for MARVEL's British weeklies in the '70s & '80s. I'm not such an expert so I won't even bother trying. Instead, I'll settle for just introducing the second instalment of The TITANS cover gallery and taking satisfaction from sharing this collection with fellow Criv-ites everywhere.
So, let's have a big hand for me then, for being so unselfish and an all-round great guy! "Hip, hip, hoo..." - hey, where'd everybody go? Oh, well... can't win 'em all, I suppose.

This post was a real treat since I haven't seen most of these covers before. Most of the covers look like they may have been penciled by Keith Pollard, with the majority of inking by Mike Esposito;issue #20 may be inked by Klaus Janson. My guess on #19 is Dan Adkins.
Wait 'til you see the Larry Lieber (I think) redrawn Kirby covers yet to come, Nick. They're a treat indeed.
ReplyDeleteNice to see these again - I was never quite sure if I liked Titans or not it certainly had a lot of reading in it and some good strips, but for me it had no real star strip in it ( although I really enjoyed the Inhumans strip- especially when it ran Neal Adams artwork) as I recall the inside centre "poster" was always a bit hit or miss - the format was a good attempt at something different but I preferred the landscape versions. I had totally forgotten about the "emergency issues" I think these had a few less pages and had paper (or non glossy) covers, not sure if that was due to industrial action (well it was the 70s) or editorial issues. Some nice covers I think Nick is correct as I recall reading that Keith Pollard did a lot of the UK comics covers at this time (along with Pablo Marcos and Ron Wilson)
ReplyDeleteThe Titans was 'landscape', McScotty, so it was the normal version you preferred, I think. I was never too enamoured of The Titans either, which is probably why I never kept them (apart from #1 - still have my original copy), but it's good to see them again and be reminded of those times in the '70s. Yes, the 'emergency' issues had no glossy covers and fewer pages, but it was never explained in subsequent issues just what the precise nature of the emergency was, although there WAS an apology. I think the comic improved when the FF came on board, but it was obviously too little too late as far as its ultimate fate was concerned.
ReplyDeleteI'd agree with Paul about The Titans having no real star strip (the X-Men ? Geddouttahere !) UNTIL the FF started in #27. One thing that bugs me about these covers is the "also featuring" strip down the right-hand side which was just ugly and intrusive in my opinion - thankfully this had been dropped by about #30.
ReplyDeleteAnd the comic was dropped less than half that number of issues later. Not that the 'also featuring' strip being absent was anything to do with that, I imagine.
ReplyDeleteThanks to this gallery, I see that the X-Men were in this comic, which I never knew. I always thought that they were only in the Super-Heroes weekly in the 70's. In any event, their debut in Marvel UK was LONG overdue!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check, JP, but I have a feeling that some of those X-Men stories appeared in both titles (at different times).
ReplyDeleteI think there was a period of a few weeks when the X-Men were in both The Super-Heroes and The Titans at the same time - in late '75/early '76 before The Super-Heroes was cancelled.
