A cascading cornucopia of cool comics, crazy cartoons, & classic collectables - plus other completely captivating & occasionally controversial contents. With nostalgic notions, sentimental sighings, wistful wonderings, remorseful ruminations, melancholy musings, rueful reflections, poignant ponderings, & yearnings for yesteryear. (And a few profound perplexities, puzzling paradoxes, & a bevy of big, beautiful, bedazzling, buxom Babes to round it all off.)

That really is some gorgeous artwork.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Mike Noble ever went under another name? I only say this as one of my favourite comic strips from my youth was the Space 1999 strip from Look-In magazine. This art is uncannily similar.
I got the two re-imagined graphic novels of Space 1999 released last year and they reprinted -with some odd editing - his strips from that time [sadly not all of them], I was mightily impressed!
Karl, I'm not sure who drew Space 1999 in Look-In (don't think I ever saw the strip), but I remember that John Cooper sometimes drew in a style based on Mike Noble's art. Perhaps it was one of those instances. Mike did draw for Look-In however, and may've been the very artist who drew the Space 1999 strip.
ReplyDeletePut me down as another fan of Mr Noble's artwork. Along with Frank Bellamy and Ron Embleton doing the art for the Anderson series in comic form seeing art by any of these three guys does bring back fond childhood memories of comic buying and reading. Did a quick online check and Mike Noble is credited with the art on Space 1999. Although the Space 1999 strips I recall most were those illustrated by another UK comics legend John Burns, or John M Burns as he is sometimes credited. Wasn't sure if Mr Noble was still with us, retired no doubt by now. Though I could be wrong. Thanks for another chance to see that iconic Fireball Annual cover!
ReplyDeleteIconic is the word, PC - I love that cover. I think Mike is retired, but still does the occasional thing from time to time. (Like the art on the DVD boxed set of Fireball a few short years back.) And thanks for checking up on Space 1999 and answering Karl's question.
ReplyDeleteYes, Mike (and John Burns) did Space 1999 strips in Look-in - Shaqui knows all and presents it beautifully too
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link, Norman. I think it's in my blog list, but if it isn't, it's going to be shortly.
ReplyDeleteNorman is right about Shaqui at Technodelic, Kid. Anything you need to know about GA in comics - if you email her she will look it up for you!
ReplyDeleteI've been aware of the site for a while now, JP - great, as you say. It's now in my blog list. (I do wish she'd use a bigger type-face 'though.)
ReplyDeletePlease note that the link in Norman's comment is seemingly no longer valid.
ReplyDeleteBut you could use the archived version at Archive.org Kid
ReplyDeleteTa for that, NB. There you go, Crivvies - sorted.
