It's been a while since we featured any images from the ODHAMS PRESS publication TERRIFIC, which lasted for only 43 issues back in the 1960s before being incorporated into sister paper FANTASTIC. So, without further ado, here's another delectable half-dozen covers and pin-ups. Don't be greedy now - savour them one at a time.

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these great covers. Do you have any idea who drew the new Clea and Baron Mordo pin-ups. Although very much Ditko inspired, they're quite nice.
Nick, Barry Windsor Smith is supposed to have been responsible for drawing the pin-ups which weren't just reprints of US ones, although I'm not sure whether he drew ALL of the new ones. These ones could be by Barry, but it's by no means certain so I couldn't say for sure.
ReplyDeletePaul Ailey, who was a 2000 AD art assistant in later years, also worked on the 'Power Comics', so there's a chance he might be responsible for some of them. I have to admit 'though, that this is just conjecture on my part, as I've never read anywhere of him specifically having drawn any.
I've looked at some of the early pin-ups and can ussually recognize Barry's style, although I don't see it in these two, for what its worth.
ReplyDeleteThe Kang poster is by Don Heck, isn't it? I got a distinct feeling of deja vu from it but going by the cover date,I was a few days shy of my fourth birthday, so I don't think we had it at home...
ReplyDeleteNick, it doesn't look like his style to me either, but his name is the only one I've ever seen associated with the back-page pin-ups (excluding the US reprinted ones), so I hesitate about ruling him out completely until I uncover further information.
ReplyDeleteThe Clea one might be enlarged and retouched from a Ditko panel, and the Mordo one has been copied from a Ditko drawing, I think. If it was Smith, perhaps his style was different when it came to copying other artists.
Hopefully someone that knows will reveal the facts before too long.

Dougie, yup - Don Heck for sure. I was about eight when this comic came out. I'm eight again when I look at it.

ReplyDeleteIt's certainly possible that Barry was copying Ditko's style (and swiping figures and backgrounds). There is little to go on, since most of the pin-ups I've seen (and art from his early years) are greatly Kirby inspired.
