HOUSE Of MYSTERY C-23 FACSIMILE EDITION...

Copyright DC COMICS

Here's a nice 'little' item I bought myself recently - a facsimile of DC's Limited Collectors' Edition C-23, The House Of Mystery.  I never owned the original back in the '70s, and even though these 'facsimiles' aren't always exact replicas in every detail (i.e. colour, image size, etc.), they're pretty nice to have in their own right.  Anyway, rather than subject you all to my weary wittering, I'll just show you some of the contents, eh?  You'd like that, you say?  Very well - here you are then.  Don't say I never listen to you.  And please feel free to leave a comment.

(There's a bit of a ripple on some pages due to the fact they're so large and because I didn't want to lean too hard on them while scanning in case I creased the spine by trying to flatten them out.)

  1. They didn't colour the centre page pin up in the facsimile. Other than that its good.

    1. Unlike the rest of the issue, I think it was scanned from a published comic, resulting in it being 'washed-out' and appearing uncoloured. If you look closely at it though, you can see some faint colour present.

    2. Oops, wrong page I was thinking of. The centrespread pin-up is in b&w sure enough, and looks to have been reproduced from the original artwork or a scan of it. There also appears to be 'patches' on it.

Strange, but the host character 'Cain' looks different further in, than from his first appearance on the introduction page? And who would play a game like that, with no good outcomes to contrast the bad? Still, I liked the spooky feel and artwork. Nice purchase again, Kid!

    1. I think Cain looking different is perhaps just down to different artists' styles, AAW. I didn't pay much attention to the games as I'm more interested in the strips.

  3. I was a keen buyer of the House of Mystery regular comic back in the 1971-1975 period, and I bought the original (now long gone) of this facsimile, so it's great to have a decent copy back in my hands again. What a roster of artists! I really like this large format. My LCS has a stock of exact-size polypropolene bags and backing boards for these Limited Collectors/Treasury editions, which they sell individually, which is a great incentive to buy the comic. Without a decent bag, I'm unsure that I'd buy the comic.

    1. I'll have to track down some of those bags and boards, B, but I keep them in a sturdy box at the moment, with a lid on it.

  4. The game was the first thing I looked at. I enjoyed the cartoons very much and they reminded me somewhat of The Far Side by Gary Larson, I don't know if you're familiar with?
Just as an aside, I have to say these things while I think of them, there is a guy on YouTube who I watch called Jules Burt. He's a collector, toys, comics but mainly books, he had a shop in Plymouth I think in the 80s/90s. Anyway in the latest video he mentioned that he was in a comic shop in the 80s and they had three copies of Amazing Fantasy #15 for £150 each. Just imagine that! They go for between £12k and millions now. I'd have bought all three if I'd seen them! Then again I was probably skint in the 80s.

    1. Yeah, I've seen The Far Side - I think it's in one of the UK newspapers, or used to be - can't recall which one. I wonder what kind of condition those AF #15s were in, eh? £150 was still a lot of money in the '80s.

  5. Ooh look at this! You have this one, don't you, Kid? 😉

    1. Yeah, I've got several issues of Superman #1 - plus various facsimile editions. You think I'm poor or something?

  6. I've seen FF and Spider-Man etc #1s for sale in mid 1970s fanzines for £40 etc. Like the AF price of £150 , £40 was a lot of money then. In addition in 1975 FF #1 was only 14 years ago.

    1. Back around the mid-'70s, McS, I bought JIM #83 (Thor's debut) for around £20 - then accidentally damaged it. I've still got the one I bought in the mid-'80s, which I think cost me around £60. Just think, the mid-'80s (which still seems fairly recent to me) was 40 years ago. Gasp!
