I remember first seeing Typhoon Tracy sometime around the mid-to-late '60s in a comic in my primary school classroom during a break one day. Couldn't tell you if it was an old copy of Hurricane or a then-current issue of the merged title of Tiger and Hurricane, maybe even an Annual or Summer Special, but whichever publication I saw him in was a classmate's and not my own, which is why I no longer recall (if I ever did) precisely which printed weekly or yearly periodical it was where I first laid my baby-blue eyes on him.
Hurricane lasted only 63 issues, from February 1964 until May '65, though the Annuals continued until 1973 (for '74), so it had a good long run past the life of its weekly counterpart. Typhoon Tracy was the star, similar to Valiant's Captain Hurricane, though Tracy was a sailor, not a marine. Close to 30 years ago, I obtained numbers 1 and 3 and they've sat in a cupboard for all this time without me ever reading them. "Must get #2" I often thought, as I later normally bought #s 1-3 of most new titles, even if I never continued with them.
Anyway, before I bore you all to death, I recently acquired #2 and finally completed the trio, so I thought I'd show you the covers of them, along with a combined ish of Tiger and Hurricane, which hopefully you'll appreciate seeing. Did any of you Crivvies (the older ones obviously) ever buy Hurricane back in the day, and if so, what did you think of it? Start typing those comments now - every one gratefully appreciated, not just by me, but by your fellow Crivvies too. So who's going to be the first to take the plunge? (And say if you'd like to see some contents.)
Now that you've got all the first three will you finally read them? Seems a pity not to.
ReplyDeleteIt does, doesn't it, so I probably will. Can't say when though, but hopefully it won't take another 30 years, CJ.
DeleteI remember having the 1969 Hurricane annual as a kid but never the comic, at the time. I did however manage to pick up an issue of the weekly comic in Arthurs in Glasgow around the early 1990s, a nice looking comic but it didn't really struck me as being one I would have liked as a kid.
ReplyDeleteLooking through it now, McS, it seems a bit tame, especially when compared against the Odhams titles of only a few years later (Wham!, Smash!, Pow!, etc.). Back in October 2016, I published a cover gallery of all ten Hurricane Annuals, though as far as I recall, I personally own only the first one for 1965.
DeleteThese are a bit early for me but I always used to buy nos. 1, 2 and 3 of any new comic, usually for the free gifts but also because I knew they would be the most valuable. I remember feeling gutted when Starlord launched because it was 12p and far too expensive for me. I think other comics were around 7p or 8p at the time so I couldn't justify 12p. I've since acquired all issues and free gifts plus annuals and summer special. Strange that Tiger has 'SEVENPENCE' as the price instead of '7d' somewhere on the masthead. I guess it looks nicely laid out the way they have done it.
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough, I don't remember even seeing Starlord when it first came out, M, though I bought the first couple of issues of Tornado, which I still have (and their free gifts). I later acquired #3 in the late '80s or early to mid-'90s, thereby completing the trio.
DeleteTornado was a comic I stuck with from start to finish, so all 22 issues I have are my original comics plus the annuals and summer special. I've got the Mayday Pack free gift but not sure if I still have the Turbo Flyer or potato gun (I think was the third gift).
ReplyDeleteThinking it over, I got Tornado mixed up with Starlord. The three issues of Tornado I have are my originals, it's the first three Starlords I own (not bought at the time, but years later), the third one joining the ranks many years after I acquired the first two.
DeleteToday (June 14th) is exactly 50 years since POTA #35 came out which featured the start of Marvel's adaptation of Beneath The Planet Of The Apes. Marvel UK had been advertising the upcoming adaptation for weeks across all its' comics so I was hugely looking forward to it and I don't think I've ever been more excited about any comic than POTA #35.
ReplyDeleteToday is also exactly 53 years since my family first moved into this house, CJ, where we lived for 11 years before moving elsewhere. Just over 4 years later we moved back into the very same house. On August 1st, I'll have been back for a whopping 38 years.
DeleteAnd Happy Anniversary on first reading POTA #35, CJ. (I've commented in the right post this time.)
