I'm a big Ditko fan, but I have to give the nod to "Jazzy" Johnny Romita on this one. His covers were at once coherent and dynamic. "Sturdy" Steve seems a little overwhelmed by the number of folks on his cover. Still a nostalgic dandy though.
ReplyDeleteRip Off
In Ditko's version, Spidey seems to be leisurely lowering himself into the gathering villains (or waiting for them to assemble); whereas in Romita's version, it's all happening and Spidey's right in the thick of it. So I'd say Jazzy Johnny's cover has the edge - though I think I prefer the colouring on Spidey's costume on Sturdy Steve's rendition. I'd like to have seen Stevey using Johnny's layout though.
ReplyDeleteSame as Rip. Both artists gave created great and classic covers but Romitas is my favourite...just.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Ditko's cover is helped by the positioning of that big cover 'blurb' in the corner, McS. I'd say it should've been smaller, but yeah - Romita's version just steals the prize.
ReplyDeleteDitto on Romita. The characters of Sandman, Doc Ock and Mysterio are all much more active in his version, whereas in Ditko’s, poor Mysterio nearly gets lost in the shuffle.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Mysterio looks as if he was added in at the last minute.
