Safely arrived today at Castel Crivens straight from Rebellion is Volume II of The Rise And Fall Of The Trigan Empire, featuring the wonderful art of Don Lawrence (and Ron Embleton). Do I need to say anything more? You should be putting on your hat and coat (and don't forget your trousers - I've found that judges can be very unforgiving about that sort of thing) and be halfway out the door on your way to buy your own copy of this marvellous book. Or you could do what I did and order it online. So what are you waiting for? Get buying!
A wonderful strip with stunning art and imho an entertaining storyline. I probably won't pick it up as I have various other editions and Ian cutting back on comics (to specialise on my favourite period) but if anyone hasn't read or seen this strip it's a must buy.
ReplyDeleteI'm warming to the style of storytelling, McS, which is perhaps a bit 'copy-heavy' by modern standards, but is typical of UK '60s comics. That's me got the first two volumes and I'll probably get the rest as they're released.
ReplyDeleteI never bought Look & Learn but I did read the odd issue now and again (in school for example) so I'm aware of the Trigan Empire and I thought the artwork was stunning.
ReplyDeleteI was walking down the high street in my town centre this morning and all the Christmas lights were blazing and one of the two Christmas trees was all lit up (the other one in the shopping precinct was gone). It was all unusually festive for January 11th :)
I didn't start buying Look & Learn until around the late '70s, CJ (still got 'em too), though I seem to remember seeing it in school, and I definitely saw it in doctors' and dentists' waiting rooms. A few years back there was a limited series of 48 issues, which featured the best of the mag, though it was simply called Look & Learn, which I bought. It featured The Trigan Empire from the first episode, and the reproduction of that episode was even better than in volume one of the Rebellion reprint collection. There was also a giant hardback volume entitled The Best Of Look & Learn and I've got that too, as well as a facsimile of the first issue. In fact, I've also got the original first issue as well.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that sounds like typical council efficiency to me. That's what your rent and rates go on - paying for Christmas lights and decorations nearly halfway through January.
I first saw the Trigan Empire when it was reprinted in Vulcan. Look and Learn was for clever kids not numpties like me.
ReplyDeleteActually, that may be where I first saw it as well, McS. Although I'd seen issues of Look & Learn lying around in various places prior to that when I was growing up, I'm not sure that I ever actually read any. If I did, I've forgotten. I'd have thought L&L WAS for numpties like us, as clever kids probably knew it all already.
