Way back in 1976 or '77, I bought a 45rpm single of HONEY MONSTER singing a cover version of SUGAR SUGAR by The ARCHIES. I still have it, but as SUGAR PUFFS seems to no longer exist, I've found myself being attracted to various bits of tie-in merchandise from when it was one of the UK's favourite breakfast cereals. One of my most recent acquisitions is this colourful mug, from which I'm drinking a nice cup of tea as I type. Thought you might like to see it, so here it is.
My days eating Sugar Puffs ended in the early 60's.
ReplyDeleteIn the 50's some of the free gifts in this cereal were the best. Racing Cars, Ocean Liners to name two.
It's disappointing to hear the cereal no longer exists as it was advertised on the sets of the movie DALEKS INVASION EARTH 2150AD which would indicate they should be around another 131 years!
Also the advertising was for the image/packaging before the Honey Monster existed.
That's right, they originally used a bear called Jeremy as the mascot (riding a train), didn't they? I seem to recall reading somewhere that the bear later ripped off its handler's arm. The cereal used to be made by Quaker Oats, but the Honey Monster himself now seems to be owned by a company called Honey Monster Foods. I'm assuming it's them who make the replacement for Sugar Puffs, now called Honey Monster Wheat Puffs. That's why I'm glad to have a few items of Honey Monster merchandise from when he was owned by Quaker Oats and represented the Sugar Puffs brand.

ReplyDeleteApart from the record, which I've had since the '70s, I only started acquiring Honey Monster stuff in the last couple of months or so. I don't remember there being any other bidders on the stuff I bought though, unless I've just forgotten.
ReplyDeleteIt has become a little lean of late, I have (just off the top of my head) mugs, record, jigsaw, frisbee, mini comics, stickers, cards, hand puppet, plush variants (largest being around 24" in height) bowl... errr.... a few original packs (go along side the plush toys) oh a watch! im sure there are others i'm forgetting i had to put them in storage when the Monster Munch collection started to spill over. I need to get up there and have a proper look! I'm still looking out for a kite but it needs to be in the right condition at the right price ;)
ReplyDeleteI've got the mug, two large soft toys, the hand-puppet, and a pencil case/stationery set, and the record. I've also got transfers that I got ages ago, free with either Sugar Puffs or a comic. That'll probably do me, AJ, unless I see something that I absolutely must have.

But n, i am quite selective with what I get, my collecting line seems to stop when he became a snowboarding fitness fanatic encouraging us to reduce our sugar intake and take plenty of exercise... as a parent over the past 17 years I have been saddened by how children have lost, a large choice of weekly comics, cartoons in the afternoons, Saturday mornings and school holidays and cereal with engaging characters on the box and free stuff inside! ("oh cool! Alton Towers family vouchers hurrah, much better than a reflector for my bike, stickers for my school bag or figures for my shelf) and they wonder why kids are lost to phones, what else is there exactly??? Anyway, Honey Monster seemed to represent that time for me.... rant over!
ReplyDeleteI bought my recent stuff mainly to remind me of when Sugar Puffs could still be bought in the shops, AJ. Honey Puffs is an acceptable alternative, but they keep changing the name. I think they're now called 'Honey Monster's Wheat Puffs' or something like that. Talking of free stuff, I recently managed to obtain an atomic submarine - bicarbonate of soda operated. (I had to pay for it of course.) Remember them?
