'CRIVENS!' DOES IT AGAIN - ANOTHER COMPLETE CHRISTMAS ISSUE OF WHAM! (#132, 1966)...

CRIVENS! - the finest comics blog that money can buy - which is doubtless why it's free. (There's a hint of a joke in there somewhere.)  Anyway, here we are again with a complete issue of WHAM! (#132 to be precise) for your nostalgic perusal, as we pull back the curtains of time for a look at what Christmas comics were like 56 years ago.  If I remember correctly, Wham! had started reprinting MARVEL's The FANTASTIC FOUR in August of that year, and I'd started buying the comic not long after, having first read the FF's origin when it had been simultaneously published in SMASH!  Wham soon became my favourite comic for a while, because I was in love with The INVISIBLE GIRL, SUSAN STORM.  (I don't know what I saw in her - guffaw!)

Anyway, you don't visit this blog to read what I write (you undiscerning lot), so let's jump straight into the pretty piccies.  As always, your comments are welcome.

  1. I have this evil urge to quickly post the 1967 Xmas issue.

At first, i passed right on by, not realizing you had updated today. Sneaky running consecutive specials to fool us. (Yes, i know that wasn't the purpose. was it?)
While i have the '65 and '67 Xmas issues, '66 is new to me. Good choice!
The Fantastic Four never quite seemed like it fit the book for me, but it's awfully hard to complain about extra Kirby.

  2. This was the first Wham! I ever bought and I kept buying until the comic ended. I've still got them all but this one is in a terrible state.

  3. I'll hopefully be posting the '67 issue soon - one year there were two Christmas issues, and '67 might be it. My first experience of the FF was in Smash!, then Wham!, so for a while I couldn't understand why there were US issues of my favourite characters. Had we been ripped off? No! 'Twas the other way around (sort of).

  4. It could very well be '67 that had two Xmas issues. The one i have on hand is dated 30 December, which i thought was rather late for the holiday. It would make more sense if there had been another issue a week prior.

Yes, you got ripped off. They stole your colour!

  5. Mel, your comment must've been waiting to be published while I was typing out my previous response, 'cos it's just this moment popped up. By my reckoning, that means you bought the last 86 issues (132 included) of Wham! before it was merged with Pow! Did you continue with the combined comic?

    ******

And our women during WWII don't forget, 3. Whichever year it was that had two Christmas issues, the covers of both are on the blog somewhere.

  6. And you lot have been throwing your accent at our women ever since.
That's the easy way out, Kid. More fun to go digging for old Wham! issues and see if i can find it that way. Never know what else i might stumble across on the hunt. (I've already gotten distracted by the 1967 Wham! Annual and a very Odd Wham of another sort from '67 that may wind up being a post soon.)

  9. I dunno - where is Edinburgh again? (Off to my scratcher, see you rammora.)

  10. You don't mention Edinburgh in the bio, and haven't mentioned it in the blog entries since April 25th. I'm copping fair ignorance.
But, in the looking, i saw much Bob Hope and was pleasantly amused by the mirrored connection - Bing Crosby is the big local boy hero down the hill. I always liked them best On The Road with Dottie.

...and now i'm having disturbing visions of the trio in a pass-thru bit in the next Deadpool movie...

    I'm rambling again, aren't i?

  11. Sean Connery is from Edinburgh (I'm not), and that was my written impersonation of his accent, hence the mention of the place. Couldn't tell you which point of the compass it's at from my location. Yeah, the 'Road' movies were great - love 'em all (though some were better than others).

  13. Yes Kid I was getting all the power comics from when Smash started until they stopped being published. I've still got all the Fantastic's, Terrific's and those Wham's from #132 but my Pow and Smash collection have gone. Thank's for uploading these comics especially the ones I don't have access to anymore.

  14. Nae bother, Mel, glad you're enjoying having a few memories revived. I've also got a full set of Fantastic and Terrific, plus close to a full set of Smash (may even have a full set, can't quite remember) - and same again with Pow!. Don't have a full set of Wham!, but probably have more issues now than I ever bought originally. I didn't start buying Wham! until after the FF started appearing in it. Got all the Annuals in the Power Comic series also. Those were the days.
