Now this is better. A hint of KIRBY's abstract musculature remains, but thanks to the inks of VINCE COLLETTA (I think), the main drawing of THOR and HERCULES is far more visually convincing than the cover of THOR KING-SIZE ANNUAL #5, shown in a recent post. Now, here's a puzzle for you: Which of the four small cover panels is the odd one out - and why?

ReplyDeleteYeah, this one in particular was a belter, PM. A stash of them must've been found in a warehouse in 1973, 'cos this ish turned up 'brand-new' in several newsagents in my home town. I'd first read the main tale in Fantastic Summer Special in 1968.
ReplyDeleteI remember that happening where I used to live around 1973/4 I found a batch of early US Marvels (and some Charltons) from 1969 / 71 in a newsagents in Blantyre including Iron-Man 38 and Spider-man issue 80 which I bought (and no longer have sob) I think I also got a Sgt Fury but cant remember the issue - sadly those things don't happen now.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the GCD the inker on this one is Sol Brodsky. It seems to lack Colletta's sure (if controversial) hand. The shading seems to operate in a few directions.

Yeah, sad, ain't it, PM. I occasionally have dreams where I walk into a newsagent's and find loads of brand-new 'old' comics on sale. To think that such dreams once happened in real life, eh?

Marvel.com lists Colletta as cover inker, RJ, although I'm not entirely sure (hence the 'I think' in the post), but it looks nothing like Sol Brodsky's inking style. The more I look at it, I wonder if Kirby might've inked it himself.
Kid, I've also had that dream about discovering classic comics on sale in a newsagent - the newsagent in my dream is the one near my secondary school but in the dream I'm discovering the comics in the present day not back in my schooldays. Paul, are you looking forward to another referendum on Scottish independence ? (I won't bother asking Kid because I know what he thinks on the issue).
ReplyDeleteSame with me, CJ - present day, 'though sometimes I'm still living in a previous house, as if I never moved away. Sometimes it's new versions of old comics I see in the newsagent's, like Wham! and Smash!, etc., or Beezer and Topper. Sometimes I see a 'new' comic by DCT, but printed in their '60s style newsprint format and containing Marvel reprints. I often resent waking up and finding it was all just a dream.

With regard to that dream, I regularly have it too! But I never have enough dosh to get all that I want! ( just like real life! )

Hercules only won 'though, JP, because big daddy Odin cut Thor's strength in half during the fight - the tit! Zeus halts this one before a winner can be decided. What are we like? Sad dreamers, JP - sad dreamers.
