....And even more thanks, Kid!
ReplyDeleteI have been following the covers over on Steve's and it looked to me that once Star Lord merged with it, that the comic really started improving in leaps and bounds. Even so, I still hadn't started buying it yet and, as when I did, it WAS on cheap pulp paper, THAT is the 2000AD that I prefer ( just like the Beano! )
Incidentally, I believe the plan WAS to release Star Lord (in superior paper), because 2000 AD still wasn't selling shedloads. So IPC were hoping that Star Lord would be a big success and then they could merge Twoothy with it to make one brilliant mag on top quality paper! Unfortunately though, (or, fortunately, depending on whichever way you look at it!), Star Lord was a bit of a flop (despite being a great mag!) and the merger had to go the other way!
Cheap paper and printing doesn't usually bother me, JP, but I liked the size and shape of this 9 ish run I bought (I don't know when it was changed to this better paper), and when the comic reverted to the cheaper newsprint, it just didn't seem as good by comparison. 2000 A.D. was going to get the chop a good few years ago until Rebellion bought it. If they hadn't, it wouldn't be around now.
ReplyDeleteIn the drawings by readers section is a sketch by the one and only Shaky Kane,
ReplyDeletethe unabashed Jack Kirby stylist.
Yup, I know - that's why there's a footnote there saying that very thing, Baab. (You weren't paying attention.) There's also a footnote about Kevin Sutherland in the previous part.
ReplyDeleteWolfie Smith ? The same name as the character on the Citizen Smith TV show. And was Twoothy the nickname for 2000AD or did John make it up himself ?
ReplyDelete"POWER TO THE PEOPLE!"
DeleteCan't remember where I first read it affectionally called "Old Twoothy", Col, but more than one fan have referred to it as such. I joined the bandwagon, as its easier than going to numbers and caps!
Spotted the Wolfie name, CJ - dunno whether 'Twoothy' is JP's exclusive creation or not.
ReplyDeleteI'd have thought it was easier just to type '2000' (without the quotes) - shorter and quicker.
ReplyDeleteNot with my fumble-fingers! I am a very slow, one finger typist!
DeleteI was lost in the moment.
ReplyDeleteSo long as it was a moment you enjoyed, Baab, then no harm done.
ReplyDeleteI'm up to two fingers now. (Why does that sound faintly rude?)
