Not exactly what you'd call a dynamic splash page perhaps, but certainly an evocative one, BARRY SMITH's and FRANK GIACOIA's image has a quiet power and foreboding menace that, to me, makes it entirely memorable. I first read this story in 1972, in the MARVEL Annual for the following year, and never quite forgot it. Now you can all remember it as well, by Crom!
That's an evocative splash page ? If you say so, Kid - it's your blog. The first Conan story I ever read was "Lair Of The Beast-Men" in Savage Sword weekly #2 - now THAT was a great opening splash page with Conan kneeling by the body of the mighty beast-man he'd just defeated.
ReplyDeleteIt's evocative because it evokes feelings of a bygone (forgotten) age, the end of the day as the sun goes down, the quiet resolve of a brooding stranger entering a village, and - to me personally - an Autumn afternoon on October when the tang of fallen leaves was in the air, and I first saw and read this story. It brings thoughts, memories and feelings into my mind (and that of others also, I'm sure), and in so doing, surely fits the definition of evocative? You find one Conan splash page impressive, I find another likewise. Funnily enough, it was a toss-up between the two of them when doing this post, but I decided to go for the Zukula one because I liked the colours and thought they fitted the season.
