RECOMMENDED READING: BLACK WIDOW #1...

Image copyright MARVEL COMICS

If you enjoyed MARK WAID's and CHRIS SAMNEE's
run on DAREDEVIL, it's a pretty safe bet that you'll enjoy their
new mag, BLACK WIDOW, the first issue of which is in comic-
book shops even as I type these imperishable words.  So get your-
self 'round to your local store and grab a copy today.

  1. I'm reading Squirrel Girl. Howard the Duck. Daredevil. I gave up on the Flash. Story's move too slowly. Silver Surfer thanks to Mike Allred also on the reading list.
DC has alienated me. Their main characters have become unrecognizable.
I'm also collecting the Sunday Captain Easy by Roy Crane. Gorgeous art! I got vol.2 half price.

  2. The only DC mags I've read in years aside from classic reprints are Swamp Thing (and that's only because co-creator Len Wein is back writing it) and DK III. DC have chopped and changed their heroes so much that I'm no longer interested in them. I'm reading the Allred Surfer stories currently reprinted in MWOM.

  3. DC has alienated me as well I just can't get into much of their output since the New 52 - I only pick up Swamp Thing from DC and old back issues from when they were fun to read (oh and the Neal Adams Superman 6 issue special which isnt looking great from the first issue imho) . For Marvel Im down to this one Black Widow as its the Waid , Samnee team (was sorry to see them leave Daredevil) firdt issue was very good - I pick up the od Marvel to rey it but cant get into them - Surfer is pretty good but I'm not keen on the Art (even although I do relaise he is a great artist its just not a style I like that much).

  4. I don't know what DC is thinking of, McS. They seem to be alienating just about everybody with what they're doing. How many 'reboots' is that now? In fact, I don't think I even care anymore. Black Widow looks like it'll be a corker, and Swampy is keeping me intrigued. I'm enjoying the Surfer reprints in MWOM, but I don't think I'd have bothered buying the original U.S. issues if I'd seen them first.

  5. I wouldn't mind DC’s reboots if they were any good but more than 90% of it is just utter crap I think I only liked “OMAC” by Giffen and a few of the early Green Arrows and Darwyn Cooke / Bruce Timm one offs. For me DC is now just mostly boring, violent and bland with flashy art (that when you look closely isn't that great in many cases)- The difference with titles like “Black Widow” (and the Surfer and Swamp Thing) is that they are drawn and written by professionals that know the business and how to tell a story in word and pictures without every 2nd page being a poster or an excuse to show T&A ruddy fanboy wannabes. I still pick up the UK MWOM title now and then as well (pretty entertaining stuff most of the time)

  6. I was disappointed by what they did to The Forever People, after being quite excited to see them appear again, McS. Changed the sex of one of the characters, and the mag went absolutely nowhere in its mercifully brief 9 issues. Why do Kirby characters and then change them? A wasted opportunity. It's a shame that Wein seems only to be on The Swamp Thing for 6 issues.
