KLASSIC KOMIC KOVERS - STAR WARS #1...

Image copyright DISNEY

Here it is - the comic that saved MARVEL!  Yup, had it not been for this particular comicbook, Marvel would most likely not be around today.  They were in pretty bad shape when this series went on sale and it ended up saving their bacon!  The force was obviously with them.  (For further info, click here.)

  1. Kid, if Star Wars "saved Marvel" then how did DC survive considering they didn't have Star Wars ?

  2. You're assuming that DC was in as bad shape as Marvel, CJ. One should never assume, because then you make an ASS of U and ME. DC had Superman, remember, and the movie franchise was ready to roll.

  3. I thought Marvel's Star Wars was rather underwhelming and I don't believe Star Wars saved Marvel. A company as famous and successful as Marvel needed to be saved by a single title - come off it.

  4. "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Don't take it up with me, CJ, take it up with Marvel luminaries like Roy Thomas and Jim Shooter (and others) - they're the ones who claim it.

and then come back and tell us what's what.

(I recommend it to anyone interested in Marvel and Star Wars; and as the URL above might indicate, there are three more entries preceding it should you wish to read further)

  6. Oh, come off it, BS. (That's humorous irony by the way. Or should that be ironic humour?)

  7. I agree but someone bought them. At least it had Al Williamson art then Infantino. But I hardly read them.

  8. I don't think I ever read them in their original American format ('though I bought #1 years later), but I saw the stories in the British weekly. I wasn't a huge fan of the movies anyway, so the comic didn't do a lot for me. However, it's generally acknowledged that the comicbook series 'saved' Marvel.

  9. OK, I read that link provided by B Smith - I accept that Star Wars was a big help to Marvel but I still refuse to believe the company would have gone under without Star Wars.

  10. On this blog, CJ, you're allowed to believe or disbelieve whatever you want without someone trying to bully you into changing your mind. However, while it may be possible that some other means of saving Marvel might've popped up in the absence of Star Wars, I think I'll align myself on this occasion with those who were there at the time (and had access to the facts and figures) who say that Star Wars saved Marvel's butt. 'Though f you prefer the luxury of disbelieving something in the face of the pertinent historical accounts, then who are the rest of us to say thee nay?

  11. Kid, I totally believe it, because it was all MY fault! Me and others like me, that is! We of a certain age who had been regular Silver Age Marvel comic buyers had grown up, got married, had new homes to set up, etc. and simply didn't have the spare cash for comics any more ( or records, for that matter, which ecplains why many early 70s stars found it hard to get a hit in the second half of the decade!)
Marvel had seen with POTA that the licenced Sci-Fi films were popular, so they aimed at the next generation that were coming along, gambling on their also trying some traditional Marvel titles, along with their Star Wars. And it looks that they did just that!

  12. Well, it seems to have worked, JP, because Marvel are still around today. (Even if they are part of the Disney empire.)
