PART TWO OF RUPERT BEAR COVER GALLERY (UPDATED)...

Images copyright CLASSIC MEDIA/EXPRESS NEWSPAPERS

I could never work out why RUPERT BEAR isn't coloured brown inside the books (and in the FROG SONG video) because he is on the covers, and he is supposed to be a brown bruin after all.  Okay, yeah, I know it's likely an 'expense' thing, but it makes him look like a polar bear.  The 1973 Annual has a 'variant' cover, with him being brown on one version, and white on the other - apparently the latter is highly sought-after by collectors.

Anyway, these (along with the books in part one) are all the Rupert Annuals I own, although I do have three fun books (which I've shown before), as well as a couple of other books that'll no doubt pop up on this blog one day.  Until they do, enjoy the covers in this post.

This book celebrates 75 years of Rupert's existence

And this book is the 75th Rupert Annual

  2. Merry Christmas to you, too, JP. Maybe they'll bring out the TV21 Daleks and Johnny Future books in 2016, eh? That'd be nice.

  3. May you enjoy the holiday and/or celebration of whatever is your ethnic, religious, or social group, whenever it or they may be, and whatever it or they might be named.

And if that is still not politically correct enough for somebody, then the heck with it.

  4. That white variant cover is a fairly big part of the plot in the last ever Adrian Mole book, just so you know...

And that one with the baby yet I going after his ice cream is the only Rupert book I ever had - even as a 9 year old I gave it up for the car boot sale within the space of a year, but it's nice to see it again.

    Merry Xmas to you, Kid!

  5. Thanks, TC. I'll just say Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year, and you can translate it into your celebrations of choice. I've never bothered with that PC stuff. Ho ho ho! You have a good one.

I've never read any AM books, THB - any good? Have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year, and I hope Santa brings you everything you're looking for.

    1. They're my favourite books of all time... lost track of how many times I've read them now! Absolutely gutted when Sue Townsend died last year, but at least the last book ended happily...

And oh hey it's Christmas right now! Enjoy it!

  6. I'll maybe get one from my local library and give it a try, THB. I'll let you know what I think.

  7. Good stuff... Make sure you start with the first one, obviously - follow his whole life from 13 to 40-odd.

The best thing is that every time I read them through I find more to laugh at, as obviously I know more of history/politics/culture as I've got older.

  8. I remember watching the programme on telly years ago, with Julie Walters and then Lulu playing his mum. Or was that something else?

  9. Kid, that's definitely Adrian Mole you're thinking of - I watched the TV show too. I thought it was funny when the Falklands were invaded and Adrian's dad gets in a complete panic thinking the Falklands are just off the coast then finds out they are 10,000 miles away (or whatever) and wonders what all the fuss is about - Sue Townsend perfectly satirizing the moronic masses who'd never heard of the bloody Falklands before Argentina invaded but demanded we get them back because they were "ours". I also loved that their dog was called "Dog" - because when I was a kid we had a cat and he never had a name - we just called him the cat. This didn't seem odd to me - to this day I still think giving animals names is a bit silly.

  10. You do realize the irony of making that last remark in response to a post about a bear called Rupert, don't you, CJ? I think it's silly to have an animal and not give it a name. If every dog-walker in the park just shouted 'dog', confusion would reign.

  11. But why do dog-walkers shout their dogs' names anyway ? The dogs don't understand their names. And it's not ironic with regard to Rupert because Rupert can talk and wears clothes and is clearly a member of polite society so it's obvious that he and his animal friends would have names.

  12. Of course dogs recognize their names. Mine did hers. And Rupert's still a bear - an animal with a name. (My dog wore a raincoat and was a member of polite society - she often took tea with me.) Oh, you do talk nonsense at times, CJ.
