If the loving lady in your life is looking for something nice to get you for Christmas, why not drop a helpful little hint and steer her in the direction of MARVEL's mighty fine DEATHLOK The DEMOLISHER softcover volume, which (gasp) reprints The COMPLETE COLLECTION for your reading pleasure. And guess just where she could buy one from? That's right, you clever fellow, your local comics store or book shop is bound to have some copies sitting on their shelves right now!
Well, what are you waiting for? Tell her to get her lippy on and drag her along there immediately before they sell out!
Deathlok was one of my all time favourite origin stories and my original issue of Astonishing Tales 25 is almost falling apart as I read it so often. I think I have most of the original run in the loft - My girlfriend is getting me a wee comic Xmas present of the "Frankenstein Monster" collection ( I hope, hints have been given) - I just picked up the latest "Ultimate Graphic Novel Collection" with the Defenders in ASDA collecting Marvel Feature 1-3 and The Defenders 1-5 I can recommend it highly and "only" £9.99.
ReplyDeleteI had a few of the original Deathlok comics back in the day, McS - all sadly long gone. I'd like to pick up a couple just for old times sake, even 'though I've now got the collected edition. You'll enjoy the Frankie book if you find it in your stocking. (And when did you start wearing stockings, ya poof?) DANGER, DANGER, WILL ROBINSON! Oh-oh, there goes my warning signal - happens every time I indulge in a wee bit of Glasgow humour that no one up here turns a hair at, but people in England start having fits over. I'll check out that book, but I think I may have the contents in other publications.
ReplyDeleteHaven't given Deathlok much of a spin beyond his initial outing, which seemed a teensy bit derived from Cyborg, the novel that Six Million Dollar man was based on. He did have that thing in head that he kept talking to, called it sand wedge, or some other kind of golf club, never really got the relevance of that reference myself.
ReplyDeleteI think Rogue Trooper's chips were probably 'inspired' by Deathlok's computer, DSE. I haven't noticed the 'sand wedge' reference yet, I'll have to pay closer attention.
ReplyDeleteDeathlok has always been a fave, right from buying the original AT issues, most of which I still have. But I also have this collection, purchased earlier this year, and it is well worth the money!, assembling as it does pretty much every 20th century appearance of the cyborg. Really liked the conversations between the human and machine parts of his brain. Just a pity the version of him in the SHIELD TV series was nowhere near as badass as the comic. Missed oportunity there, even greater tragedy was the later comic was based on the watered down TV version. Talk about the tail wagging the dog.

ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the TV version, Phil. Only seen a couple not quite a of episodes of the show. I've got a little Deathlok action figure which is quite cool.

Now you're asking, CJ. I think I saw them somewhere, but can't remember exactly where. Anyone out there help? (I may well have them, so it's annoying that I can't recall the comic.)
You know, somewhere I've still got a piece of Cam Kennedy Rogue Trooper artwork, a back page poster but I think it's Venus not Rogue himself.

ReplyDeleteYep Colin Deathlok was one of the "Star Wars" back up strips he also appeared in "Havoc" comic in the early '90s and in at least a few issues of Super Spider-man or Titans in a team up tale (can't recall if it was a Spidey (Marvel Team-Up) or the Thing (Marvel Two in one).
