ReplyDeleteKid, I can remember the exact date that I last saw this film - New year's day 1999. Unfortunately I was at the beginning of a bout of flu that didn't pass for another week. I was watching the film with my father who claimed not to like musicals but he liked 'Chitty', 'The Sound Of Music', 'Mary Poppins' to name but three - he died in September '99 so that was his final new year's day. Some other memorable songs are Toot Sweets, Truly, Truly Scrumptious and I think there was a song when Truly is pretending to be a ballerina on a music box...? It was a long time ago so I might be a bit confused...
ReplyDeleteMartin, working on the principle that it costs an arm, a leg, and the shirt off your back to even go and SEE a movie now, I imagine remaking it would be astronomical.

No, you're right, CJ, it was called 'What Do You See?' and Dick Van Dyke sings 'Truly Scrumptious' in harmony with it. It was the Sherman Brothers who wrote the songs for both Mary Poppins and Chitty - that's why a lot of folk think the latter is a Disney film, rather than an Eon one.
I saw Chitty in The George cinema in Bellshill.

My mother took us to the pics quite regularly,
All the family classics plus a lot of obscure second features.
One of the obscure headliners was the Gary Glitter movie.
The cinema was packed out,I had to sit on the stairs.
Chitty is one of my favourite movies.
When my kids were toddlers we watched it at least once per month,then it stopped when they were about four years old.
When they were about ten I put it on and they both drew a blank on ever seeing it.
See? That's what comes from force-feeding your toddlers your favourite movies when they're too young to appreciate/remember them. An obvious case of sensory overload resulting in amnesia.
ReplyDeleteI had the toy and LP. Didn't see the movie until many years later. Played with the car in the tub until it got yucky and threw it out eventually years later. Unfortunately it doesn't float well. On the other hand it was a great theme song until you got a bit older and tried not to song the word which rhymes with chitty. Being a teen is quite terrible.
ReplyDeleteI've got the toy (3 versions actually - the 1960s original, the 1990s re-release, and a more modern, less-detailed one), the LP (also used to have the cassette), CD, DVD, 3 modern Corgi Junior versions, and a huge plastic one from several years back. Yup, boasting again.
